There are no plans for journalists to reach the refugees and migrants. The camp is guarded, and press representatives are apparently not allowed in, nor are members of parliament. "Employees of Frontex and other EU authorities are allowed in, but we as elected representatives of the people are not," criticized Miguel Urbán Crespo, who sits in the European Parliament for the governing party Unidas Podemos and wanted to visit the camp. "What is there to hide?" asked the politician, announcing his intention to draw the attention of the EU to this new "disgrace". read more

In the early hours of a Sunday in late November, 16-year-old Jeancy Kimbenga tried to reach Europe for a third time. He was on one of three dinghies that landed on the Greek island of Lesbos that day from Turkey. On that occasion, as with his two previous attempts, Jeancy claims he was forcibly returned to Turkish waters. So-called pushbacks, without consideration of a migrant's individual circumstances and without any possibility of applying for asylum, are illegal under international human rights law. Greece has denied it uses such methods, insisting it is complying with European and international law and protecting the borders of the European Union. read more

The Moria refugee camp has been a shop window for Europe’s asylum policies, featuring a policy of deterrence. Governments have spent billions from public funds to curb migration. But migration experts say that deterrence does not work on refugees. Instead, they call for alternatives that are both realistic and humane. read more

When multiple fires destroyed Europe’s notorious refugee camp, it became apparent that more than 3,000 asylum seekers were missing already. While authorities remain silent regarding their whereabouts, we met some of them. We witnessed them living in limbo, working under exploitation, and being victims of brutal attacks; crossing borders to reach the “European dream” or failing to do so. We also delved into the government’s practices of fabricating the numbers. read more

Genf.

The text has not been made public, according to French news agency AFP. However, according to information obtained by that agency, it is thought that ultimately the aim would be to allow French judges the possibility of ordering returns on the basis of placement decisions made by Moroccan judges.
