Sie zeigen verzweifelte Menschen, die unter gefährlichsten Bedingungen in primitiven Booten ihre afrikanische Heimat verlassen haben und erschöpft das rettende Land erreichen. Das Problem der Bootsflüchtlinge wird einer der Schwerpunkte des G8-Treffens der Innen- und Justizminister am 29. und 30 Mai in Rom sein. Die Küstenländer Europas wie Italien fühlen sich alleingelassen und verlangen Hilfe von der EU. read more

Retter von Bootsflüchtlingen müssen in Italien mit vier Jahren Haft rechnen. Das Urteil ist kommende Woche zu erwarten. Von dort aus versuchen sie, die Kanarischen Inseln zu erreichen - aber nur wenige schaffen es. Der Bundespolizei ist erneut ein Schlag gegen die Schleuserkriminalität gelungen. Bei einer Großkontrolle auf dem Autobahnrastplatz Altholzkrug hatten die Beamten in der Nacht zu Sonnabend in drei Autos insgesamt neun Flüchtlinge ohne Ausweise entdeckt, wie die Bundespolizei am Montag mitteilte. In einem Auto war ein Iraker, der im Laufe der Vernehmung einen Asylantrag stellte. Ein Taxi aus Hamburg sollte vier Afghanen im Alter von 16 und 21 Jahre nach Skandinavien bringen. In einem weiteren Fahrzeug entdeckten die Beamten gleich vier afghanische Staatsangehörige im Alter von 13 bis 58 Jahren auf der Rücksitzbank. read more

Ein 35jähriger Albaner ist gestern nahe Florina in Nordgriechenland verhaftet worden, nachdem in seinem Kleinbus 20 illegale Einwanderer entdeckt worden waren. Zwei weitere Verdächtige, die in Autos vor dem Bus unterwegs waren, wurden ebenfalls festgenommen. (in englischer Sprache) read more

Die australischen Behörden haben ein Flüchtlingsboot mit 73 Asylsuchenden an Bord vor der Nordwestküste des Landes gestoppt. Es sei das 13. Boot mit Flüchtlingen, das in diesem Jahr vor Australien gestoppt wurde oder anlandete, teilten die Behörden mit, ohne jedoch die Nationalität der Flüchtlinge preis zu geben. Sie würden zu einem Immigrationszentrum gebracht und untersucht. Australien werde "effektiv und angemessen gegen Menschenhändler vorgehen". read more

Italien hadert mit seiner neuen Identität als Einwanderungsland. Bis vor knapp 20 Jahren waren es nämlich die Italiener selbst, die auf der Suche nach Arbeit in die ganze Welt auswanderten. Die steigende Zahl von Immigranten sorgt in der Bevölkerung für Unbehagen - und die Regierung Berlusconis kann mit einer harten Ausländerpolitik von den wirtschaftlichen und sozialen Problemen ablenken. read more

Mit einer italienischen Parlamentsdelegation traf sich der Staatssekretär des Außenministeriums, Jannis Valinakis, am Donnerstag in Athen. Anlass für Gespräche war das sich zunehmend verschärfende Problem illegaler Einwanderung nach Griechenland, Zypern, Italien und Malta. Alle vier EU-Staaten werden nun als „Quattro Gruppe“ gemeinsam nach Lösungen suchen, so Valinakis. read more

Die Kriminalisierung von "illegaler" Einwanderung in Italien hat im Senegal heftige Proteste hervorgerufen. Hintergrund ist, dass von den ca. 300.000 senegalesischen MigrantInnen in Italien nur 60.000 Papiere haben und Hunderte der sans papiers im Gefängnis sitzen (angeblich wegen Drogenhandel). Der italienische Botschafter im Senegal findet das aber nicht so schlimm und meint, es sei eine Gelegenheit, zwischen den beiden Regierungen über eine gemeinsame Regelung der "Migrationsströme" zu reden. Bundesinnenminister Wolfgang Schäuble (CDU) muss sich bei einem Forum, das sich dem Schicksal der afrikanischen Bootsflüchtlinge im Mittelmeer widmet, kritische Fragen gefallen lassen. Junge Leute halten Plakate mit der Aufschrift "Stoppt das Sterben" hoch, auf dem Boden vor der Freiluftbühne sind schwarze Müllsäcke ausgebreitet, die an die Opfer dieser "Tragödie vor unserer Haustür" erinnern sollen. Die Menschenrechte hätten auch auf hoher See Geltung, betont Schäuble, für ihre Einhaltung könne er aber nicht im Falle aller an der Mission beteiligten EU-Staaten garantieren. read more

Die Migranten, die sich von Afrika aus in Richtung Europa aufmachen, tauchen in vielen Medien bloß als Zahlen auf, zumal wenn Zeitungen in dürren Worten wiedergeben, dass wieder einmal Menschen im Mittelmeer ertrunken sind. So würden "die Gestorbenen zu einem statistischen Wert reduziert", kritisiert der marokkanische Schriftsteller Youssouf Amine Elalamy. Um dazu einen Kontrast zu schaffen, hat er mit dem Roman "Gestrandet" die Geschichten der Menschen hinter den Kurzmeldungen mit literarischen Mitteln rekonstruiert. Das Infoportal "Qantara" hat das erst kürzlich ins Deutsche übersetzte Buch rezensiert. read more

Sie hatten schwarze Leichensäcke dabei, gefüllt mit Luftballons, besprüht mit dem Label der europäischen Grenzschutzagentur Frontex. Rund 100 AntirassistInnen kamen am Donnerstag zum Schuppen 1 auf dem Kirchentagsgelände. Mit den Säcken wollten sie an die 13.000 Menschen erinnern, die in den letzten Jahren beim Versuch nach Europa zu gelangen, im Mittelmeer ertrunken sind. Und daran, dass gleich diejenigen auftreten würden, die für das Sterben verantwortlich seien. read more

Ein sudanesischer Einwanderer mußte heute morgen ins Krankenhaus gebracht werden, nachdem er bei einer Auseinandersetzung mit einem Landsmann im Zeltlager von Hal Far verletzt worden war. Nach Polizeiangaben erlitten auch mehrere Angehörige der Sicherheitskräfte leichte Vverletzungen, als sie einschritten um die Situation unter Kontrolle zu bringen. (in englischer Sprache) read more

Nachdem Italien mit der Abschiebung von Migranten nach Libyen begonnen hat, suchen die Menschhändler nach neuen Wegen, um Flüchtlinge nach Europa zu schleusen. Mehr als 80 Migranten landeten am Donnerstag an Bord kleiner Boote im südlichen Sardinien. Die Migranten waren laut italienischer Küstenwache von den algerischen Küsten abgefahren. Sie wurden in ein Flüchtlingslager nahe Cagliari gebracht. read more

Die Kanaren-Regierung ehrt den uruguayischen Surfer Cristian Hunt, der bei der Flüchtlingstragödie vor der Costa Teguise (Lanzarote) unter Einsatz seines eigenen Lebens 6 Überlebende aus dem gekenterten Cayuco geborgen hat, mit der goldenen Verdienstmedaille der Kanarischen Inseln. Auch der im Juni 2008 verstorbenen Musiker José Antonio Ramos wurde mit der Medaille ausgezeichnet. read more

Der italienische Ministerpräsident Silvio Berlusconi hat die Flüchtlingslager seines Landes mit den nationalsozialistischen Konzentrationslagern verglichen. Es humaner, die Flüchtlinge auf dem Mittelmeer abzufangen und nach Libyen zu bringen, erklärte er am Dienstag. "Ich glaube, es ist viel einfacher, die individuelle Situation im Herkunftsland zu prüfen", so Berlusconi. "Andernfalls kommen sie hierher und landen in einem Lager, das - ich sollte das nicht sagen - einem Konzentrationslager sehr ähnlich ist." read more

Der maltesische Innenminister Mifsud Bonnici berichtete gestern vor Parlamentariern von seinen Bemühungen um die Eindämmung illegaler Migration. Unter anderem habe sein deutscher Amtkollege Wolfgang Schäuble zugesichert, einen Hubschrauber zu entsenden und jeden Einwanderer aufzunehmen, der von deutschen Kräften gerettet werde. Jüngst hatte Italien angekündigt, Flüchtlinge, die auf dem Meer von Afrika her Italien zu erreichen versuchten, abzufangen und direkt wieder an den Ausgangsort zurückzubringen. Verständlicherweise handelte er sich damit heftige Kritik von Menschenrechtlern ein. Nun reicht Berlusconi eine Rechtfertigung nach: «Ich glaube, es ist viel einfacher, die individuelle Situation im Herkunftsland zu prüfen. Andernfalls kommen sie hierher und landen in einem Lager, das – ich sollte das nicht sagen – einem Konzentrationslager sehr ähnlich ist», sagte der Ministerpräsident jüngst bei einer gemeinsamen Pressekonferenz mit EU-Kommissionspräsident José Manuel Barroso, der Respekt für die Rechte der Asylsuchenden einforderte. read more
