Bei einer Explosion auf einem Flüchtlingsboot sindvor der Küste Australiens mindestens drei Menschen ums Leben gekommen. Das Unglück passierte, während das Boot von der Marine zu einem Flüchtlingslager auf der zu Australien gehörenden Weihnachtsinsel eskortiert wurde, berichtete die Polizei . Zwei Menschen werden vermisst, zahlreiche andere wurden verletzt. Die Marine hatte das Boot, das aus Indonesien kam, am Mittwoch vor der Westküste Australiens entdeckt. An Bord waren 49 Flüchtlinge, wahrscheinlich aus Afghanistan. read more

In einem Zehn-Punkte-Programm forderte der Nationalrat der rechtskonservativen Volkspartei, Hans Fehr, vorläufig Aufgenommene von der Sozialhilfe auszuschliessen und auf Nothilfe zu setzen. 200 bis 300 zusätzliche Grenzwächter sollten im Tessin dafür sorgen, dass der Strom der Asylsuchenden aus Lampedusa eingedämmt werde. «Papierlose» dürften nicht legalisiert werden. read more

Weitreichende Inhaftierung und Folter sowie die extrem lange Wehrpflicht führen in Eritrea zu einer Menschenrechtskrise und immer mehr Eritreer verlassen deshalb ihr Land, so Human Rights Watch in einem heute veröffentlichten Bericht. Zu den Menschenrechts- verletzungen zählen willkürliche Festnahmen, Folter, schreckliche Haftbedingungen, Zwangsarbeit und schwerwiegende Einschränkungen der Bewegungs-, Meinungs- und Glaubensfreiheit. In dem Bericht wird zudem die schwierige Situation der Eritreer untersucht, die in andere Länder wie Libyen, Sudan, Ägypten und Italien flüchten konnten. read more
Binnen weniger Stunden strandeten 343 Bootsflüchtlinge auf der Insel Lampedusa. Laut italienischen Medienberichten erreichte am frühen Morgen ein Kahn mit 239 Immigranten die nur 20 Quadratkilometer große Insel zwischen Afrika und Sizilien. Neben zahlreichen Nord- Afrikanern, darunter 45 Frauen und zwei Kindern, waren auch zwei Chinesen im Boot. Später brachte die Küstenwache noch zwei weitere überfüllte Boote in Sicherheit - mit 62 bzw. 42 Menschen an Bord. read more

Vor der süditalienischen Insel Lampedusa sind mindestens 500 Bootsflüchtlinge aus Afrika aufgegriffen worden. Wie die Küstenwache mitteilte, befanden sich die Flüchtlinge auf mehreren Booten. Ein Teil der Immigranten solle nach der Feststellung ihrer Personalien in ein Auffangzentrum in Porto Empedolcle auf Sizilien gebracht werden, sagte der Bürgermeister von Lampedusa, Bernardino De Rubeis. read more

Der Flüchtlingsexodus aus Somalia findet von der Weltöffentlichkeit weitgehend unbeachtet statt. 260 Schiffe mit 13'240 Flüchtlingen haben seit Januar die jemenitische Küste erreicht. Im letzten Jahr waren es rund 50'000 Menschen. Die meisten unter ihnen brechen in der somalischen Hafenstadt Bossasso auf. Seit dem vergangenen Dezember hat der Jemen die Küstenpatrouillen verschärft, was laut Uno-Angaben 600 Menschen mit dem Tod bezahlt haben. Die Schmuggler werfen die Flüchtlinge aus den Booten, oder diese springen über Bord und versuchen, an Land zu schwimmen. read more

Die Zahl der Migrationsopfer entlang der europäischen Außengrenzen im Monat März betrug mindestens 316. Diese Zahl beruht auf Presseberichten und ist noch ungewiss, da die Nachrichten über das letzte Unglück in Libyen noch widersprüchlich sind. Während Reuters libysche Quellen zitiert, die von 100 aufgefundenen Toten und 245 im Meer Vermissten sprechen, erwähnt das IOM - Büro in Tripoli 20 Tote und 210 Vermisste. Drei Tage lang saß ein Afghane in Wien in Schubhaft - mitsamt seiner Kinder im Alter von vier, sieben und zehn Jahren. Die aus Afghanistan geflüchtete Familie war zu Jahresbeginn nach Österreich gekommen, hatte zuvor aber schon einen Asylantrag in Griechenland gestellt. Aufgrund der Dublin-Verordnung der EU - diese sieht vor, dass jenes EU-Land für ein Asylverfahren zuständig ist, in dem erstmals ein Antrag gestellt worden ist - soll die Familie nun wieder dorthin abgeschoben werden. read more

Das Schweigen der Presse und der Behörden lässt das tägliche Drama, das sich auf Lampedusa abspielt, langsam aus dem Bewußtsein verschwinden. Lampedusa, das längst zu einer einzigen großen Abschiebungshaft geworden ist. Die Bundespolizei hat am Karfreitag im Bereich Selb einen Vietnamesen wegen des Verdachts der Schleusung festgenommen. In dem von ihm geführten Pkw fuhren zwei Landsmänner mit, die beide nicht über die erforderlichen Reisedokumente verfügten. Laut Bundespolizeiinspektion Selb war der mutmaßliche Schleuser bereits am Freitagmittag von Deutschland nach Tschechien gefahren, wo er die 20- und 25-jährigen Männer mitgenommen hatte. read more

Trotzdem wird die Zahl der illegalen Einwanderer gerade im Bereich der Kanarischen Inseln, des Mittelmeeres und der Ägäis weiter zunehmen. Gerade auf dem Wasserweg spielen sich viele Tragödien ab. Die Zahl der Todesopfer bei der Fahrt über das Meer nimmt erschreckend zu. Die EU investiert im Jahr 2009 allein 88 Millionen Euro für den Schutz der Außengrenzen, das sind 15 Millionen Euro mehr, als im letzten Jahr. Ob man damit das Flüchtlingsproblem in den Griff bekommt, bleibt zu bezweifeln. read more

Die Europäische Kommission hat letzten Dienstag Libyen für eine engere Kooperation im Kampf gegen die illegale Immigration angefragt. Sicherheitskommissar Barrot äußerte, dass es dort jedoch Probleme gebe. "Libyen hat um finanzielle Unterstzützung gebeten, um die Südgrenze zu sichern", so Barrot. “Das ist unser Fischfanggebiet und ihre Durchfahrtszone”. Fast jeden Tag kreuzen die Fischer im Kanal von Sizilien die Boote der Migranten im Meer vor Lampedusa. Und immer öfter ersetzen sie die Küstenwache und die Marine in schwierigen Rettungsaktionen. Die letzte fand am vergangenen 28. November 2008 statt. Bei stürmischer See und acht Meter hohen Wellen sind fünf sizilianische Schiffsbesatzungen beherzt 650 Personen zu Hilfe geeilt. read more

Eine große Anzahl von Nigerianern ist Anfang der Woche aus Libyen abgeschoben worden. Die ca. 140 meist jungen Frauen wollten sich wohl nach Europa einschiffen. Sie wurden bei ihrer Ankunft nach der Situation in Libyen befragt. Da sie keinerlei Geld bei sich hatten benötigten sie Hilfe, um zu ihren jeweiligen Zielorten zu gelangen (Artikel in engl. Migrationsminister Besson kündigt an, dass er für 2009 das Ziel hat, 5000 Menschen zu verhaften, die bei der illegalen Einreise oder dem illegalen Aufenthalt behilflich sind. Die EU setzt zu einer neuen „Harmonisierungsstufe“ in der europäischen Asylpolitik an. Harmonisierung - das bedeutet, wie so oft, auch in diesem Fall schlicht Vereinheitlichung. Und wie oft in den vergangenen Jahren sind die Details der geplanten Neuregelungen in Deutschland kurz vor ihrer Verabschiedung heftig umstritten. Auf der Flucht aus Somalia sind am Wochenende vermutlich 30 Menschen im Golf von Aden ertrunken. Acht seien mit Sicherheit tot, 22 würden vermisst, teilte das UN-Flüchtlingshilfswerk UNHCR am Dienstag in Genf mit. Ein Unglück ereignete sich demnach am Samstag, als ein mit 40 Somaliern besetztes Boot von Menschenschmugglern vor der Küste des Jemen kenterte. read more

Auf der griechischen Insel Lesbos sind heute Morgen neun Flüchtlinge aufgegriffen worden. Die wahrscheinlich aus Afghanistan stammenden Migranten im Alter zwischen 17 und 28 Jahren hatten die Insel in einem kleinen Boot mutmasslich von der gegen berliegenden türkischen Küste aus erreicht. Sie waren völlig durchnässt und ausgekühlt. Aktivisten der lokalen Hilfsorganisation "Proti Stasi" ("Erste Station") versorgten die Flüchtlinge mit Lebensmitteln, trockener Kleidung und Decken. read more

Ein Einwurf von Stefan Jehle - Die Medienmaschinerie ist zuweilen gnadenlos: Am Mittwoch war Barack Obama beim "G20“ in London, am Freitag weilte er in Baden-Baden, Samstag und Sonntag folgten Straßburg und Prag. Die Blicke der Europäer waren auf Wirtschafts- und NATO-Gipfel gerichtet. Ganz "nebenbei" erwähnten einige Zeitungen dann noch in kurzen Absätzen, dass sich vergangenen Dienstag im Mittelmeer eine Flüchtlingskatastrophe von ungeheurem Ausmaß ereignete – eine der größten in der Geschichte. read more
