Die Gemeinden Siziliens haben sich in den vergangenen Jahren gegenüber den ankommenden Bootsflüchtlingen solidarisch und großzügig gezeigt. Selbst nicht gerade mit Reichtum geschlagen, reichten sie den Ankömmlingen die Hand und versuchten, sie wenigstens für die ersten Wochen nach der Flucht über das Mittelmeer in Sicherheit zu bringen. Die Geduld hat nun offensichtlich ein Ende gefunden: Bereits bei den Kommunalwahlen im Juni wurde die Bürgermeisterin von Lampedusa, Giusi Nicolini, abgewählt. Italien hat eine Verlängerung des EU-Militäreinsatzes vor der libyschen Küste verhindert. Die Regierung in Rom kündigte kurzfristig weiteren Prüfbedarf an. Deshalb konnten die EU-Außenminister nicht wie geplant ein erweitertes Mandat für die Operation "Sophia" beschließen.
