The Serbian border police had engaged in a pushback, or collective expulsion, one of many such actions along the travel routes used by migrants and refugees trying to reach Western Europe. But unlike most such illegal deportations, the officers' actions in February 2017 resulted in the Afghan refugees winning an unprecedented legal victory in Serbia's highest court. read more

The head of the UN refugee agency said on Friday he had called on Italy not to unnecessarily obstruct NGOs operating rescue boats for migrants in the central Mediterranean. He also spoke of how the number of migrants arriving in Europe via the Balkans is increasing but still lags behind the number arriving by sea. Grandi said there have been human rights abuses by countries along the route, including "brutal push-backs the likes of which we haven't seen in a long time." read more

The extent and number of fires in refugee camps have so far been insufficiently recorded and documented. What is clear, however, is that it is a frequent phenomenon and is linked to many problems and shortcomings. It shows once again that despite the clear obligations of the international community towards refugees and displaced persons, more and more states are trying to evade their responsibility to protect and are not complying with international law agreements. read more

Crossings from West Africa to Tenerife and other islands in the Atlantic continue to increase. There, people are stuck in overcrowded camps, more than 23,000 refugees who made the crossing in precarious boats from Africa to the Spanish islands in the Atlantic last year. That is more than at any time since the record year of 2006. CEAR, which works directly with the United Nations Refugee Agency, deplores the "inhumane treatment". read more

The future of Afghanistan is becoming more uncertain with the withdrawal of Nato troops. The US Army and the Bundeswehr will soon withdraw from Afghanistan, and if a civil war breaks out, this would lead to a migration movement towards Europe. Calls for a complete ban on deportations are being heard in the Bundestag. In connection with the dispute over EU sanctions, Iran recently made it clear that it would no longer block the way to Turkey for Afghans. This could lead to a new refugee crisis in the Mediterranean region as early as this summer. read more

In the summer of 2020, Denmark made a decision with which the country remains alone in Europe to this day: The authorities declared parts of Syria a safe country of return and began revoking the temporary residence permits of Syrian refugees in Denmark. The move was criticised by representatives of the United Nations and refugee organisations, but initially attracted little attention in Denmark or the rest of Europe. Now, at the beginning of April, a refugee student appeared on television. A heated debate was sparked. read more

As a domestic policy consequence of the Afghanistan withdrawal by the USA and allies, PRO ASYL demands an immediate halt to deportations and a reassessment of the persecution situation by the Foreign Office and the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF). "Afghanistan is now becoming even more of a Taliban country, the federal and state interior ministries must stop the monthly deportations. We call on each federal state to decree on its own responsibility the legally permissible 3-month ban on deportations and to bring about a nationwide regulation at the conference of federal and state interior ministers in June," said Günter Burkhardt, executive director of PRO ASYL. read more
