A team of lawyers wants to legally force the European border protection agency Frontex to withdraw from its mission in the Aegean Sea. This emerges from a letter that SPIEGEL was able to inspect. In the letter, the group led by lawyers Omer Shatz, Iftach Cohen and Anastasia Ntailiani level serious accusations against Frontex chief Fabrice Leggeri. "Frontex is complicit in the Greek policy of abandoning vulnerable migrants at sea," Shatz says. He calls the illegal pushbacks in the Aegean Sea, which SPIEGEL has documented several times together with research partners, "crimes against humanity"; they are illegal expulsions, torture and potential murder. read more

As divided as the EU states may be on asylum policy, there is one thing they can agree on: protecting the EU's borders. But Frontex, the agency entrusted with this task, is in crisis. Marina Strauß from Brussels. Marko Gašperlin can be reached by phone at the Slovenian Ministry of the Interior. He is one of those who are trying to bring a heated debate back down to room temperature. A debate about how big the problems really are at the EU border guards of Frontex - especially with regard to possible violations of fundamental rights. When it comes to the external borders of the European Union, there are different positions, says Gašperlin. Those of the human rights organizations that denounce violations. And those of the police, border guards and coast guards, whose job it is to prevent illegal migration. read more
