North Rhine-Westphalia's Refugee Minister Joachim Stamp (FDP) has opened a return and reintegration centre supported by NRW in the Ghanaian capital Accra. Stamp inaugurated the "Migration Information Centre for Returnees" (MICR) with government representatives of the Republic of Ghana. The MICR is to advise returnees from Germany and Europe on support services in Ghana after their arrival and is reportedly operated by the Ghana Immigration Service. In the dispute over the detention of the sea rescue ships "Sea-Watch", Italian authorities have won a stage victory before the ECJ. According to the ECJ Advocate General, the ships were allowed to be inspected and detained - but not without restrictions. At the centre of the legal dispute are the questions of whether Italy exceeded its competences and whether the ships are to be seen as rescue ships or cargo ships. read more

On the night of Friday 18 to Saturday 19 February, the so-called "Libyan coastguard" fired live ammunition at a boat containing around 80 migrants, including women and children. The exiles were trying to avoid being intercepted at sea and sent back to Libya. According to the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), one person was killed and three injured. The IOM "condemns in the strongest terms the excessive use of force by the Libyan stabilisation support apparatus", namely the coast guard. The UN agency is calling for an investigation to be launched to shed light on this "incident" and to punish those responsible. read more

The Italian coast guard rescued 573 migrants who were trying to reach Europe aboard two fishing boats in distress in bad weather, during the night of Monday to Tuesday, February 22. The group of rescued migrants included 59 minors, many of them unaccompanied. One person had to be transferred urgently to land because of his deteriorating health condition. Among the people rescued was a deceased person who, according to the migrants, had been dead for several days," the coast guard said. read more

The number of asylum applications lodged in the EU, Norway, Switzerland and the U.K. increased by a third in 2021, an analysis published Tuesday by the European Union Agency for Asylum (EUAA) has found. In total, 617,800 applications for international protection were filed in 2021, marking a return to pre-pandemic figures. The main countries of origin were Syria with 106,000 applications, Afghanistan with 97,800 applications, which doubled from 2020, and Iraq with 28,700 applications. Other countries with increased applications included Belarus, with 3,800 applications, three times more than the year before, and North Macedonia, which has quadrupled its applications to 5,000. read more

In two rulings last week a judge from the Spanish enclave of Ceuta ordered the return of several migrant minors from Morocco back to Spanish territory. Spanish media reported on Thursday (February 17) that a total of 14 young Moroccans were affected by the decisions. They had arrived in Ceuta in May 2021 but were later deported to Morocco. read more
