The proposal by Federal Minister of the Interior Faeser to set a good example by forming a "coalition of the willing" to take in refugees is earning praise in Brussels. Since the refugee movement in 2015, the EU has been discussing a reform of the common European asylum system, which should also ensure a fairer distribution of protection seekers in the EU member states. However, the reform has repeatedly failed due to the resistance of Eastern European countries in particular, which do not want to take in more refugees. read more

Two years after the violent crackdown on citizens in Chios and Lesvos who oppose the transformation of the islands into prisons for refugees and migrants, dissatisfaction with the refugee response is growing. The narrative of successful management of refugees (border security, decongestion of the islands, fast registration and identification procedures) promoted by the government does not seem to convince the islanders, who see huge new structures being built despite the decrease in the refugee population on the islands. Legal disputes, dozens of decisions of political groups, bodies and mass peaceful demonstrations unite people across different political positions once again against the government policy and the EU’s dictates for “superstructures” on the Eastern Aegean islands. read more

Malta - Captain Morgan’s general manager Kevin Zammit Briffa has told a judge that the vessels used as an offshore detention centre for migrants had their registration changed from “passenger vessels” to “workboats” at around the same time that the company was engaged by government to house migrants. Captain Morgan’s general manager Kevin Zammit Briffa has told a judge that the vessels used as an offshore detention centre for migrants had their registration changed from “passenger vessels” to “workboats” at around the same time that the company was engaged by government to house migrants. Zammit Briffa was testifying in the Constitutional case filed against the Prime Minister, the Minister of Home Affairs and the State Advocate by a group of 32 migrants who were detained in what they termed a “floating prison” after Malta closed its ports in 2020 in response to the coronavirus pandemic. read more

In Greece's northern regions, the snowstorm that hit large parts of Greece a few days ago is seriously affecting those who have been left homeless as a result of another change made late last year, when the authorities effectively stopped accepting first asylum applications on the mainland. Unless they qualify as 'vulnerable', people have had no way to claim asylum on mainland Greece, Crete or Rhodes for more than nine weeks. read more

Emergency services on Spain’s Canary Islands say 319 people, including 59 women and 24 children, were rescued from seven different boats trying to reach the archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean. Walking Borders, a non-governmental organization working with migrants in the region that is often contacted by people in distress or their relatives, said at least 18 people traveling on one of the boats had died. “Rescue means were activated too late, despite having the boat’s location,” Helena Maleno, the NGO’s founder, wrote in a tweet. read more

The French police are intercepting more and more refugees at the border with Spain. According to the authorities, more than 13,000 people had to go back in 2021, compared to just under 6,000 in 2020. Because of the strengthened controls, migrants often find dangerous routes. The Spanish side criticises the actions of the French police. Only black people are controlled and the migrants are not informed about their rights. read more
