On Tuesday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will receive a high-ranking visitor: EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and the head of the European Council, Charles Michel, are coming to Turkey. They want to discuss a new edition of an agreement regarding the situation in the Mediterranean. EU leaders tasked the EU executive commission with trying to build on the 2016 agreement, which calls on Turkey to prevent refugees and migrants from reaching Europe in exchange for refugee assistance and other conditions. They also asked the European Commission to look for ways to continue funding the estimated 4 million Syrian refugees in Turkey, as well as those in Jordan and Lebanon. read more

Sicilian prosecutors investigating sea rescue NGOs and charities for alleged complicity in people smuggling have wiretapped several Italian journalists covering the central Mediterranean migration crisis and allegedly exposed their sources. Prosecutors in Trapani this month charged rescuers from charities including Save the Children and Médecins Sans Frontières with collaboration with people smugglers after thousands of people were saved from drowning in the Mediterranean. The Italian newspaper Domani revealed on Friday that in the course of their investigation, prosecutors secretly recorded dozens of conversations between journalists and rescuers who were unaware their phones had been bugged. read more
