The majority of the deportation requests come from Germany, with a total of 232, followed by Switzerland and France. These people were granted asylum in Greece and moved to other European countries afterwards. Many are facing deportation, because they are only allowed to stay in those countries for three months on a tourist visa. This doesn’t apply to refugees from Ukraine, who are free to move within the EU. read more

Authorities in Latvia arbitrarily detain fugitives in forests on the Latvian-Belarusian border. They are forced to return "voluntarily" and in large part are illegally deported back to Belarus. In the course of this, serious human rights violations such as torture and secret detentions take place. While the Belarusian authorities promised the people a smooth entry into the EU, the ongoing state of emergency in Latvia denies them the right to asylum, which means a forced deportation to Belarus. Such forced deportations between countries violate international and EU law. read more

According to the latest report by the UN Human Rights Office, migrants returning from Libya experience inhumane treatment. From the testimonies of some of the 65 refugees interviewed, it appears that abusive detention conditions, threats of torture, sexual violence, forced disappearances, as well as extortion and other abuses are their daily routine. While "assisted return" is voluntary, many have no choice but to return to the same circumstances that caused them to flee. Returnees also face additional personal, financial, and psychosocial burdens, including the severe trauma they experienced in Libya. read more

The UN mission in Libya has condemned the killing and accused migrant smugglers, further urging Libyan authorities to ensure an “independent and transparent investigation to bring all perpetrators to justice.” This killing is yet another reminder of the dangers and human rights violations faced by migrants and asylum seekers in Libya. The Egyptian government has been arbitrarily detaining Eritrean asylum-seekers and plans to forcibly remove them to Eritrea. Numerous other rights violations have been documented, such as ill-treatment of people in detention at the hands of Egyptians authorities, further violation of the principle of non-refoulement and denial of deportees’ right to a legal defense. Prior to deportation, people are reportedly held in unacceptable and inhuman conditions, and medical care is extremely poor in such facilities. These practices constitute violations of Egypt’s national and international legal commitments. A international joint statement organised by Refugee Platform in Egypt and signed by over 30 groups, including Statewatch, condemns the actions of the Egyptian government. Find it in this article. read more
