Open Arms Uno finally began disembarking 402 people at the Italian port of Messina in Sicily, this Wednesday (September 22). On board, there was the body of a 20-year-old man, Wegihu, who was allegedly killed by a smuggler. Wegihu's body was found in a boat last Friday, when 59 migrants were rescued from an oil platform in international waters off Tunisia. After disembarking, the NGO Open Arms tweeted: "May Europe treat them with the dignity to which every human being is entitled." So far this year, about 66,323 migrants have arrived on Italian shores, compared to 43,043 in the same period of 2021. read more

The decree that prevents aid groups from distributing food to people on the move in Calais was classified as “disproportionate” by a government commissioner, further asking for its cancellation. The ban was introduced two years ago to block all food distributions which are not mandated by the state. However, the food distributed by the state is insufficient considering the number of people in need, estimated to be around one thousand. read more

Sara Creta has filled an appeal at the ECHR, supported by a legal team, requesting access to detailed information on how Italian and European Union money is being used by Libyan authorities. These funds (46 million euros) are part of a program to strengthen Libyan authorities’ capacity to manage and control their land and sea borders. Creta argues that her role as a journalist is to inform people on what is happening in Libya -- and that she needs precise information on how Italian and European public money is spent there to do so. read more

Accounts of abuse started as early as 2013, shortly after the opening of the camp, and some of the victims were minors. “Humanitarians” from IOM, MSF, WFT and World Vision, working at Malakal, a refugee camp run by the UN in South Sudan, were named as alleged perpetrators. The very people that are supposed (and paid) to serve and protect, instead abuse, exploit and rape. This in-depth investigation by The New Humanitarian and Aljazeera includes interviews with local and international aid workers, camp residents and aid organizations, and draws heavily on unpublished reports. read more

Turkey represents the beginning of the journey for many Syrians fleeing their country. Many of those still in Turkey are now trying to move on to other places, in part because of the impact of the economic crisis and inflation, but also the increasing racist incidents against them. Recently, racist and violent clashes have been reported, and several Syrian establishments set on fire. Turkey is due to hold parliamentary and presidential elections in June 2023, whilst Syrian refugees continue to be a “hot topic” in the election campaign. Meanwhile, the rejection of the Turkish population is growing. There are currently over 3.6 million Syrian refugees registered in Turkey. Many of those trying to leave the country and reach Europe are left with few, dangerous options: via Greece and Italy, or via Alegria and Morocco, often in overloaded boats that are continuously pushed back by coast guards. Many are also arrested repeatedly, are treated with violence and complete disregard for human rights. Recently, there have been reports of a caravan organised by Syrians in Turkey - yet another attempt to reach “safety.” read more

More than 600 migrants from different African countries arrived in northern Niger after being forced back from Algeria, according to official local sources cited by AFP on Monday (September 20).
