Last Thursday (10/13/2022), nearly 4,000 protesters gathered in Zarsis, chanting anti-authority slogans and calling for more intensive searches for missing migrants. In a new report, Doctors Without Borders (MSF) claims that 23 migrants rescued in Maltese waters were sent back to Egypt, allegedly on the order of Malta’s Rescue Coordinator Center (RCC). This violation of the principle of non-refoulment took place on September 26, but it wasn’t the first time this has happened, as exposed by MSF. read more

The Finnish Prime Minister confirmed the majority approval of the fence construction on the Finnish-Russian border by the Parliament. The fence construction is to cover mainly southeastern areas of Finland, as the migration movement is strongest there. The European Parliament yesterday (Oct. 18, 2022) voted by a majority against budgetary discharge for Frontex. It emerged earlier in the Olaf report that the border agency has made illegal pushbacks, covered them up, as well as not investigated. Some German politicians still argue in favor of the agency and emphasize the change of personnel. The majority in parliament (345 to 284) positioned itself against the violations of fundamental rights. Another Olaf report is also to follow. read more

According to the aid organization Doctors Without Borders, 76 people with 17 minors were rescued on a wooden boat in the Mediterranean Sea on Monday evening (17/10/2022). In the course of several rescue operations on Monday, the crew of the rescue ship Geo Barants helped the survival of nearly 300 people. The Italian coast guard has taken 65 refugees. 18 migrants were found last Friday (14.10.2022) during a routine check at the German-Polish border by customs and federal police officers. The refugees, including children and two unaccompanied minors, were in an air- and light-tight refrigerated truck, where none of their basic human needs could be satisfied. Since then, the unaccompanied minors have remained with the German youth authorities, while the remaining migrants have been placed in the reception center in Eisenhüttenstadt. read more

The UN refugee agency is demanding an urgent investigation into the discovery of 92 naked people on Greece’s land border with Turkey, calling the incident shocking and saying it had been “deeply distressed” by images of the group. Images of the naked migrants, some bearing signs of injury, surfaced at the weekend after their reported discovery by patrol guards close to the river, which demarcates the border. read more

The document not only demonstrably records pushback allegations, but also proves failure to investigate and forward false information to EU institutions. According to the report by Spanish civil rights activist, Ángel Gabilondo, 470 refugees out of a total of 1,700 were deported back to Morocco in June immediately after arriving at the border with the Spanish city of Melilla. Of the 470 pushbacks, only 101 were officially recognized refoulements. At least 23 people died and hundreds were injured. Such violent immediate deportations violate international law. read more

Greek media published on Friday (14.10.2022) a photo of 92 naked people fleeing across the border river Evros from Turkey to Greece. According to some migrants, Turkish authorities initiated the escape. Some of those fleeing were injured. Frontex was present on the Greek side despite a lack of confirmation. Due to the increasing migration, Turkey will seal the border river Evros. read more

The two-year-old rescued in Lampedusa with her mother, on October 15, woke up from her coma. Both were in a very serious condition when they arrived on the Sicilian coast, after five days adrift in the Mediterranean, drinking seawater to survive. The child survived, sedated and intubated for three days, but other health complications are not ruled out. read more
