The Tajikistan authorities are allegedly forcing Afghan refugees, some of whom have been granted asylum in other countries, to cross the border back into Afghanistan. In these recent round-ups, people are picked up off the street and their houses raided, according to reports from Tajikistan's Afghan refugee community. UNHCR has requested the Tajikistan authorities to stop the unlawful detentions and forced deportations, which lack a clear motivation or policy behind them. According to The Guardian, citing Afghans in Tajikistan, the numbers of people being forced back “is running into the hundreds, with forced deportations increasing over the past fortnight.” read more

A group of asylum seekers was stranded on an islet on the Greek-Turkish border for weeks, until they were finally rescued by the Greek police, who were allegedly unable to locate the group. The incident has raised questions regarding Greek authorities’ use of the EU-funded surveillance system: could the asylum-seekers have been rescued sooner, and did the Greek authorities know where the asylum-seekers were? An investigation by DW suggests that “a prompt rescue of the group could have been possible” considering the existent surveillance technologies, and contradicting police statements in that area and others. According to the Greek Civil Protection Minister, the Automated Border Surveillance System (ABSS) didn’t provide any information about the group and their location, but it has been successfully deployed in other occasions, such as the deterrence efforts to block 36,000 people from entering Greece through the Evros border, in August alone. read more

In Italy, elections will be held in just over two weeks, and the focus of the election campaign is still migration across the Mediterranean. The so-called Malta Mechanism provides for EU states from Malta and Italy to voluntarily accept people for the asylum process who have been rescued from distress at sea by NGO ships in the Mediterranean. Implementation has been slow and the voluntary EU solidarity mechanism, which has been in force since June, is now a new attempt. Accordingly, the first asylum seekers will also be redistributed to Germany from the end of September. read more
