At a meeting of EU ministers to address an emergent ‘crisis’ of irregular migration, Fabrice Leggeri, executive director of Frontex, emphasised balancing respect for human rights with the need to manage migration across Europe’s borders and seemed to suggest a lack of clarity in EU policy was the real issue. While many EU member states and individual MEPs have expressed concern over the EU neglecting the human rights of migrants, the dominant focus overall remains on reducing irregular migration. The loudest calls for action at the meeting, from interior ministers of member states such as Italy, Poland, and Greece, were to increase EU border enforcement and crack down on "smugglers’ networks". read more

The Prime Minister has reportedly given Home Secretary Priti Patel the go-ahead to develop new powers that would allow male asylum seekers crossing the Narrow Sea to be held in immigration removal centres. Currently only migrants who land on the UK coast are breaking the law and can be detained, rather than those intercepted in the Channel. But the proposed Nationality and Borders Bill would make it a criminal offence to be found in a vessel in the Channel without pre-authorisation to enter the UK. Offenders will face a maximum prison sentence of four years under the new law. read more

Lawyers on behalf of several NGO’s have filed a complaint to the International Criminal Court (ICC), alleging that Italy and Malta assisted the so-called "Libyan Coast Guard" in intercepting migrants at sea. The NGO’s said the support of Italian and Maltese authorities to the "Libyan Coast Guard" contributed to the crimes committed against migrants in Libya's detention centers. For the NGOs these crimes committed against migrants and asylum seekers qualify, and should be investigated as war crimes under Article 8 of the ICC Statute, and crimes against humanity under Article 7. read more

The Army will start building camps to house up to 30,000 Channel migrants from next month. The project is likely to cost tens of millions of pounds, a scheme which aims to be cheaper than the current accommodation provided for migrants. Ministers hope the move towards temporary hostel-style housing on military bases will also act as a deterrent to migrants planning to cross the Channel. Meanwhile, it emerged that the Home Office could stop publishing daily figures on the number of Channel migrants when the Minister of Defence takes over operations to intercept them. read more

Nearly 11 years since the revolution in Syria began and violence escalated, around 1.5 million refugees remain displaced in Lebanon – accounting for nearly a quarter of Lebanon’s total population, the highest proportion of refugees anywhere in the world. Given the situation in Lebanon, the fact that Syrian refugees had already been pushed to the margins of Lebanese society and have received no humanitarian assistance since the beginning of last year, – and the danger of returning to Syria – it’s unsurprising that 58 percent of Syrian refugees surveyed by Refugee Protection Watch said they want to go to a third country. read more
