A sense of impunity has fueled rampant torture by militias and armed groups affiliated to the Libyan Government of National Accord (GNA) and rivals with de facto control of territory because of real or perceived family, tribal, political or regional affiliations, Amnesty International said ahead of Libya’s review at the UN Human Rights Council on 11 November. read more

8521. This is the number of refugees that have been illegally pushed back while trying to cross the Aegean Sea since March 2020. Mare Liberum collected information on 266 pushbacks, but the actual number is most likely much higher. This is because gathering information is difficult in a highly militarized borderzone where no civilian witness is present and facts are politically instrumentalized. read more

For years, thousands of migrants and refugees arriving from the Balkan route have transited through Trieste, a city on Italy's north-eastern border, only 10 kilometres from Slovenia. But the pandemic and the need to quarantine new arrivals presented new challenges for local and national governments along the so-called Balkan route, where thousands of migrants and refugees remain stranded since EU countries shut their borders in 2015. The UN has warned of an impending humanitarian crisis in the Balkans as winter sets in and thousands remain homeless. read more
