Die US-Küstenwache hat in dieser Woche erneut 55 Flüchtlinge in der Meerenge von Florida aufgegriffen und auf ihre Heimatinsel repatriiert. Die Anzahl von Kubanern, die in meist behelfsmäßigen Booten in die USA gelangen wollen, ist in den zurückliegenden Monaten stark gestiegen. Die französischen Behörden haben eingeräumt, dass die Zahl der Bewohner im Flüchtlingslager von Calais deutlich angestiegen ist. Zuletzt seien in dem als „Dschungel“ bekannten Lager rund 6.900 Flüchtlinge gezählt worden, So viele Flüchtlinge hielten sich noch nie in dem im Frühjahr 2015 entstandenen Lager am Ärmelkanal auf. Die EU-Außengrenzen zwischen der Türkei und Griechenland müssten durch die EU-Grenzschutzagentur Frontex "verlässlich geschützt" werden. Des Weiteren müssten Flüchtlinge, die in Europa ankämen oder aus humanitären Gründen nicht abgewiesen werden könnten, "in grenznahen Auffanglagern gesammelt, registriert und nach Quoten" auf die Mitgliedstaaten verteilt werden. Um die "vollumfängliche Kooperation" Griechenlands bei der Durchsetzung dieser Maßnahmen sicherzustellen, empfehlen die Experten die Anwendung finanziellen Drucks. read more

Zur Entschärfung der Flüchtlingssituation in der norditalienischen Stadt Ventimiglia bringen die Behörden derzeit Flüchtlinge mit Bussen in den Süden des Landes und nach Sardinien. Jeden Tag starteten zwei Busse, schrieb die Ansa am Donnerstag. Zumindest sei die Zahl der Flüchtlinge in dem Übergangslager der Stadt an der Riviera nicht mehr gestiegen. Gut 600 Menschen verbrachten in dem Lager die Nacht zum Donnerstag, so viele wie in den vergangenen Tagen. In Italien kommen mehr Flüchtlinge an als noch 2015. read more

In a report published on Wednesday, the Council of Europe’s special representative on migration and refugees, Tomas Bocek, praised Turkey for its efforts to help people displaced by conflicts in neighbouring states. But the report by the Czech official, who visited Turkey in May and June, raises doubts whether Turkey can cope with the challenge. read more
