How European courts are wrongfully prosecuting asylum seekers as smugglers
After a long investigation, including the analysis of court documents from the UK, Italy, and Greece, this article reveals how asylum seekers “are victims of the system” whilst being wrongly prosecuted as smugglers. Migrants and asylum seekers charged with criminal prosecutions face numerous barriers throughout their trials, such as accessing proper interpreters, and often spend months, even years, in pre-trial detention awaiting their trials. On numerous occasions, people are found innocent, but the damage has already been done. Criminal prosecutions make it even more difficult for asylum seekers to access international protection, and many end up undocumented or being sent back.
