Destination Great Britain: More than 1000 refugees cross the English Channel in one day

In a short period of time, almost 1000 refugees have once again reached Great Britain via the English Channel. The British government estimates that 60,000 refugees will arrive in the UK via the English Channel by the end of the year. The government is using various restrictive measures to tighten its own migration policy, including giving the French government millions to increase coastal surveillance. read more

Asylum shelter on water

The central center for asylum seekers in Ter Apel, the Netherlands, was visited last week by Dutch King Willem-Alexander. Until recently, up to 700 people were sleeping in the open in front of the asylum center, inhumane hygienic conditions prevailed and a three-month-old baby died. According to the announced visit, the asylum seekers were housed in hastily prepared emergency crisis reception centers. In the future, however, 1,500 asylum seekers are to be quartered on a cruise ship and an "asylum compromise" that was agreed on, includes funds for emergency shelters and housing. Criticism, however, is voiced among other things about the more difficult family reunion. read more

Fundamental Rights Office at Frontex Criticizes Own Air Surveillance

In May, there was a maritime emergency in which Maltese authorities allowed unseaworthy boats to pass so that refugees would first be rescued by Italy. Jonas Grimheden, the acting fundamental rights officer of the EU border agency Frontex, criticizes the lack of criteria for classifying when a boat needs to be rescued immediately by nearby units. Since 2017, aircraft and drones have been deployed in the central Mediterranean. However, this increasingly involves practices that violate international law, as Frontex takes over aerial surveillance of the so-called coast guard in Tripoli so that it can then return discovered refugees to Libya. read more

After a long investigation, including the analysis of court documents from the UK, Italy, and Greece, this article reveals how asylum seekers “are victims of the system” whilst being wrongly prosecuted as smugglers. Migrants and asylum seekers charged with criminal prosecutions face numerous barriers throughout their trials, such as accessing proper interpreters, and often spend months, even years, in pre-trial detention awaiting their trials. On numerous occasions, people are found innocent, but the damage has already been done. Criminal prosecutions make it even more difficult for asylum seekers to access international protection, and many end up undocumented or being sent back. Bulgaria: 141 Afghan migrants detained

Bulgarian police arrested more than 141 migrants near the Turkish border on Sunday. Among other places, the people were in a forest near Burgas, where they were apparently waiting for transport. A group of 38 asylum seekers left Italy for France last week. They are the first to be relocated with the help of the IOM (International Organisation for Migration) under the EU's new 'voluntary solidarity mechanism.'
