Since May 2021, the European border agency Frontex has been using a drone in the area around Malta and thus has important information from boats that are near the Libyan coast. This information is passed on to Libyan authorities who intercept migrants and take them back to Libya to detention camps. In the specific case of 07/30/2021 being investigated by Human Rights Watch and Border Forensic, aerial footage shows that one of the boats was intercepted within the Maltese search and rescue zone and that the nearby Sea-Watch rescue vessel was not informed. read more

The European Border Agency Frontex now wants to deploy helicopters in addition to aircraft and drones. The call for tenders is to be made up this year and the rotorcraft will then be procured next year. The new rotorcrafts are to be used in areas where there are no suitable landing sites for aircrafts and drones. The place of operation could therefore be the Evros, the border river between Greece and Turkey. In the region, refugees are regularly pushed back to Turkish regions. So far, the "Poseidon" land mission, an airship tethered to a 1,000-meter cable, has been operating in the region. read more

"Those who rely on refoulement on the high seas, transferring people to the Libyan coast guard, are breaking with international law," said the current Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock in her further role as opposition politician. The coalition agreement also stipulates the goal of ending illegal refoulement at the EU's external borders. Now the Foreign Ministry is apparently implementing exactly the opposite: it is recognising Libya's control of its search and rescue zone. read more

The German government does not keep its change of course promised in the coalition agreement. The ARD magazine Monitor has numerous video recordings documenting the crimes of the so-called Libyan coast guard. Now, the Green Party-led Foreign Ministry recognizes the "Libyan" Search and Rescue Zone (SAR) created with the help of Europe, and with it, the violent returns from international waters back to Libya. read more
