Since 14/07/2022, 50 refugees have been stranded on a sandbank on the Greek-Turkish border river Evros. Greece has been ordered by the European Court of Justice to rescue the refugees. The EU continues to invest considerable sums in border fences and the defence against people on the move: For the budget period from 2021 to 2027, the EU Commission plans to increase spending on “migration and border management" to 34.9 billion euros, more than three times as much as in the previous budget period.
