The names of the 18 airlines that profited from deportations on behalf of the federal government in 2021 are now public knowledge. Frontex is also significantly involved in financing deportation flights from Germany. read more

Common narratives often describe smugglers as ruthless criminals who take advantage of the distress of people on the move for their own financial gain. In the discourse on smuggling, little attention is paid to the harm and violence experienced by refugees as a result of state Counter-smuggling policies as well as on the reasons, why people turn to smugglers. In many cases, these measures endanger the safety and rights of refugees and their supporters rather than protecting them. read more

Since 2020, Germany has taken in 2,812 refugees from Greece on humanitarian grounds. In the view of the German government, it has fulfilled its own obligations. Clara Bünger from the Left Party, Member of the Bundestag criticizes the insufficient efforts of the EU states. There is a lack of a permanent relief of the states at the European external borders and a lack of a fair division of responsibility within the EU. Instead, more and more new camps are being built and the system of the so-called "hotspots" is being expanded. read more

The UK lags behind other European countries in the number of asylum seekers granted refugee status. By "exporting" its responsibility with the current deportation agreement with Rwanda, and thus now transferring responsibility entirely to another country, it is attempting to move further away from its international and moral obligations. The agreement represents a crisis of responsibility and sets a dangerous precedent for other countries to leverage migration for political purposes. read more
