More and more people are fleeing the war in Ukraine, especially to the neighbouring countries. On Thursday, the heads of state and government of NATO, the EU and the G7, which in addition to Germany includes France, Italy, Japan, Canada, the USA and Great Britain, will meet in Brussels. Germany currently holds the G7 presidency. According to information from government circles on Wednesday, the G7 meeting is to include a voluntary commitment by the states to take in refugees and there will also be a sign of solidarity for the countries bordering Ukraine at the EU summit. It remains to be seen whether the EU heads of state and government will agree on binding distribution quotas. read more

Over the past three weeks, Ukrainian people have become one of the largest refugee populations on the planet. But for much of the past decade, Ukraine, with the help of the EU, has acted as a border guard for Europe keeping those fleeing war and poverty from reaching safety. Since the mid-2000s, tens of millions of euros in European public money has poured in to Ukraine to construct detention facilities and detain refugees, many of whom are held in overcrowded facilities with poor hygiene standards, where they were beaten, tortured, forced to sleep on the floor, and deprived of food. At the Zhuravychi facility, the EU has funded security measures that will make it impossible for refugees to escape in case of bombing. For those in Zhuravychi these policies mean leaving them locked up and unable to flee as the Russian army advances westward. read more
