After receiving a distress call around 3 a.m. Wednesday, a large-scale search and rescue operation was carried out off the Kent coast by British and French authorities. Bulgarian police arrested 70 migrants on Sunday (11.12.22) in a parking lot near a highway in the southern Bulgarian city of Sliven. According to police, the fugitives were accompanied by two so-called smugglers. Some of the fugitives had to be hospitalized due to exhaustion. Two rescue boats arrived in ports in southern Italy on Sunday morning, carrying more than 500 people who had been rescued from the Mediterranean Sea. Dozens of children were among the rescued survivors. Italy's interior ministry said the decision to allow the two boats to dock was down to bad weather conditions rather than marking any change in Italy's anti-migrant policies. read more

After having the appeal hearing postponed several times, Akif Rasouli was finally acquitted on Thursday (December 8) in Mytilene, Lesvos. Amir’s sentence was also reduced so that he will be released after three years spent in prison. The two young men had been sentenced to 50 years for driving a boat from Turkey to Greece together with their families. Activists hope this trial will set a precedent for thousands of others in similar situations. read more

According to the bill, the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) is to make decisions more quickly and so that not so many decisions are overturned by the courts. The German Bundestag decided on Friday (02.12) that migrants with short-term toleration who have lived in Germany for at least five years until October 31, 2022, will now receive an 18-month "opportunity right of residence." This is equivalent to legal status. The island state manages such rapid deportations thanks to readmission agreements with Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and Vietnam, as well as cooperation between asylum authorities and police and European agencies, especially Frontex, from a newly established office on the island. read more
