Italy is offering in Libya and in Tunisia alternatives to crossing the Mediterranean, with voluntary repatriations and assistance - a strategy that has resulted in 8,000 prevented landings, Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi has said in an interview. Meloni added that for her government the Mediterranean region was a priority, and that meant that Italy and Libya needed to work together to make the region work for all concerned. She said that to make migration work for her country and all other Mediterranean countries, a multilateral approach is needed, where governments work "at 360 degrees." read more

EU governments rake in €130m per year in rejected visa application fees, dubbed as 'reverse remittances', according to new analysis shared with EUobserver. The total sum is likely to increase in 2024 since the visa application fee to travel to the EU will increase from €80 to €90 for adults on 11 June, following a recent decision by the EU Commission. Over the past year, the EU has begun to use visa restrictions as a political tool, using Article 25a of its 2019 visa code — a provision which allows it to apply visa restrictions for countries with low rates of migrant returns. Although the EU has promised to include legal pathways, student and work exchange programmes, and other mechanisms in its trade deals with African states, the focus of a series of recent economic support agreements with Tunisia, Mauritania and Egypt, worth over €8bn has been paying these governments to tighten migration control. read more

There has been a lack of medical care in Greek detention centers since July. The responsible organization asks for leniency. Ambulances that take several hours to get to the scene - horror stories like these keep coming out of Greek migrant camps where thousands of people live. Since the beginning of July, the medical care situation in many camps has apparently worsened. The Greek health service EODY ended all medical measures on site at the end of June. The reason: the EU-funded “Philos II” program, which was intended to ensure primary medical care in the camps, is coming to an end. According to the EU Commission, the new “Hippocrates” program should lead to an improvement in the care situation, but so far it has mainly brought uncertainty and concern. NGOs and asylum seekers are sounding the alarm: since the beginning of July, there has been no medical staff present in many camps, according to those affected from different parts of the country. Thousands of people now have hardly any access to medical care. read more
