Judges in Sicily have acquitted all crew members of an NGO rescue boat who had been accused of aiding and abetting illegal migration, in a case seen by activists as a symbol of the criminalisation of those who have sought to help at-risk refugees and migrants at sea. Friday’s verdict, after seven years of proceedings, followed a surprise turn of events in February when prosecutors in Trapani unexpectedly requested the charges be dropped owing to a lack of evidence. read more

ometime shortly after 8 p.m. on the last Saturday evening, Antonio Scurati appears in front of the camera and delivers his short monologue on 25 April, the "Day of Liberation", on which Italy celebrates the partisan uprising and the final defeat of the German Nazi occupiers and their fascist accomplices under Benito Mussolini in 1945 every year. That was the plan. But no, Scurati did not appear in front of the camera for the political talk programme "Che sarà", which is broadcast on the third channel of state broadcaster Rai. He was uninvited without further ado and his words on fascism were no longer in demand: the words of the successful author of the "M." trilogy, in which he traces the arc from the rise of Mussolini in the early 1920s to Italy's entry into the Second World War. read more

A little over ten years after a boat carrying migrants from Libya to Italy sank off the coast of Lampedusa, claiming the lives of 368 migrants, another boat has capsized in the same waters, around 50 km off the coast. Nine people perished, including a baby, after waves of up to 2.5 metres pushed over their frail vessel on 10 April. That same day, the European Parliament approved a landmark package of laws on migration and asylum, bringing an end to nearly a decade of negotiations and push-back from the far-right and left. read more
