In the second incident this week, a boat carrying people on the move in the Aegean Sea has been shipwrecked. The dinghy carried around 41 people on board and sank after hitting rocks near the island of Lesbos. Three people have died and more than 12 are believed to be missing. The coast guard said 19 people had been rescued since the early hours of Tuesday. read more

A woman was rescued at the weekend south of Lampedusa. The woman was reportedly alone in the freezing water of the Strait of Sicily, holding on to a life jacket, hours after having fallen off a dinghy crammed with people who were attempting to cross the Mediterranean. read more

An Afghan woman and her underage daughter, who arrived in Denmark in 2018, are the first to qualify for residency rights under the new regulations issued last week by the Danish Refugee Committee. The country's immigration policy was adapted to specifically address the plight of women and girls from Afghanistan. With the new law, gender is now enough of a qualifier for female Afghan nationals to receive asylum in the EU member state. The ruling is in line with a recent decision issued by the EU Agency for Asylum (EUAA). read more

An Eritrean mother, who was separated from her three children in December while all four of them tried to board a boat to cross the Channel, has reportedly also now managed to cross the Channel and arrived in the UK. The woman’s requests to be able to legally travel to the UK to be reunited with her children were reportedly ignored. As a consequence, the woman decided to board another boat and arrived in the UK on January 25. read more

In an effort to keep migrants and asylum seekers off its shores, Italy pays for tens of thousands of people to be intercepted and sent back to Libya. There, they are subjected to abuses that the UN describes as possible crimes against humanity. Italy's migration deal with Libya will be automatically extended for three years on 2 February, after the deadline for amendments expired on 22 November. read more
