The situation in Libya, one of Europe’s closest neighbours, is one of catastrophe considering the significant humanitarian needs, horrific abuses and human rights violations taking place. Meanwhile Europe is concerned about deterring people from reaching its shores, financing the Libyan Coast Guard to intercept those fleeing the country and force them back into detention centres where they are severely abused. On Tuesday afternoon (November 22), MEPs will debate the alarming situation in Libya in plenary for the first time in four years. read more

The Court of Appeal of Aix-en-Provence rejected the retention in the international waiting area of large part of the asylum seekers who arrived in Toulon. The political decision announced on Friday (November 11) was that the 177 adult survivors would be kept “for a maximum of twenty days” in a designated area, as a way to avoid official entry into French territory while studying their “eligibility to apply for asylum.” The difficulty of managing such a number of files according to the legal framework was not taken into consideration, leading to a legal chaos potentially undermining migrants’ rights. read more

Le Monde has revealed this Monday what happened almost a year ago, when a boat sank off Calais and its passengers were denied help by the French authorities. Following these revelations, the French government seems to be delaying action.
