Several Syrian families transported to Syria to be deported under Lebanon’s “revived programme” announced last week. The plan is to deport up to six thousand people on a “voluntary basis” but there are accusations of forced deportations of Syrians, endangering their lives. About 750 people were driven to the border on Wednesday but many didn’t cross into Syria due to legal issues. read more

Forty organizations, including Oxfam and Amnesty International, as well as Italy's three leading trade unions have appealed to the government to revoke the 2017 Memorandum with Libya. If the government led by Giorgia Meloni doesn't revoke the deal, it will be automatically renewed on November 2 for three years. Thousands of men, women and children have suffered abuse, exploitation, arbitrary detention and torture over the past five years, as a consequence of this deal and the European funds channeled to the so-called Lybian coast guards. read more

The so-called Libyan coast guard allegedly ordered a Sea-Watch aircraft to fly away or be fired upon with missiles. Footage from Sea-Watch shows Libyans dragging refugees onto their ship before firing on and sinking the inflatable boat. According to Sea-Watch, the incident occurred in international waters. read more

In August 2022, the Court of Justice of the EU criticized the process of German authorities in family reunification as illegal. Following the criticized two rulings, it was decided that family reunification for unaccompanied minors is now possible if they come of age during the procedure. The Italian Ministry of the Interior is blocking the landing of the rescue ships Humanity 1 and Ocean Viking on the grounds that they do not comply with European rules. Ocean Viking had rescued 146 migrants in the course of two missions and on the Humanity 1 are currently 158 refugees. Only on Tuesday (25.10.2022) the new Prime Minister Meloni expressed herself against the escape route by sea from North Africa to Italy and wanted to make it more difficult. read more

The EU Commission announced on Tuesday (25.10.2022) to increase the influence of the so-called border management agency Frontex on the Balkan route. Also, financial support in the amount of 39.2 million euros is planned. Negotiations are still to be held with the respective Balkan states. In the future, the increased deployment of Frontex officers at every European border as well as at borders with non-European countries is planned. read more

New Prime Minister Georgia Meloni proposed a naval blockade in her government statement to stem the flow of refugees from North Africa to Italy. More details about the naval blockade have not yet been disclosed. The presumed focus is on civilian sea rescues. Regarding the revival of the "Mission Sophia", the monitoring of the Mediterranean Sea by European naval units, Meloni is also not averse. read more

Through two rescue missions over two days, the crew of Humanity 1 managed to bring on board another 135 people from the waters between Malta and Libya in addition to the 45 migrants already rescued. The sea rescue ship of SOS Humanity is now sailing with 180 refugees. The organization broke away from the European network a few months ago and has since been carrying out the rescue missions with its private ship. read more

On Thursday (October 20), MSF was called for an emergency intervention, in which they found 22 people in distress, including women and children. Three people were handcuffed very tightly with plastic bundles and four others were injured after being beaten by a group of seven or eight people, who left when they notice the arrival of MSF. Episodes of brutal violence against newly arrived asylum seekers, traumatising them even more after their journey, have been systematically occurring on Lesvos and Samos. read more

“They beat us and treated us very bad. Like dogs.” Afterwards, the group of 15 people, children included, was pushed back to Turkey by the Greek authorities. They had already identified themselves before the authorities and voiced their wish to apply for asylum. This is a report from a member of this group violently pushed back in September 2022. Recent signs from Turkey and other governments indicate that they are considering normalizing relations with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. She was reported missing after the capsizing of a boat with fugitives and the rescue operation of Italian border police officers. After nine long days, Italian authorities now authorized the ship's entry into the southern Italian port of Taranto. The Mallorca-based carrier 'Privilege Style' was willing to partner with the UK government and conduct the deportation flights that other airlines had refused. This is not the case anymore, as the airline decided to withdraw from the scheme after an email campaign by torture survivors and refugee organisations, led by the charity Freedom from Torture. The European Parliament has refused to endorse the 2020 budget for Frontex due to the agency’s failure to protect the fundamental rights of migrants, and their involvement in hundreds of illegal pushbacks. The resolution was approved on Tuesday (October 18) with 345 votes in favor, 284 against and eight abstentions. Cases of sexual harassment involving staff members were also mentioned (17 cases were reported in 2020, of which 15 were closed without follow-up). read more
