Europe Keeps Its Rescue Ships Far From the Coast of Libya — Where Thousands of Refugees Have Drowned. Since 2014, the European Union has deliberately chosen to keep their coast guard patrol boats far from where the shipwrecks happen, a decision detailed in an internal letter obtained by The Intercept and other leaked documents. Saving more lives, the logic goes, will only encourage more refugees to come. The result is that rescue boats are kept away from where rescues are actually needed. read more

PM: Das höchste Gericht Griechenlands verhandelt den EU-Türkei Deal
Heute wird das höchste Verwaltungsgericht Griechenlands in einer Anhörung prüfen, ob die Türkei – wie im EU-Türkei Deal vorausgesetzt – ein »sicherer Drittstaat« ist. Verhandelt wird der Fall zweier Syrer, deren Asylanträge in erster und zweiter Instanz als unzulässig erachtet wurden und denen deswegen die Abschiebung in die Türkei droht. Ihre Fälle wurden nie inhaltlich geprüft. Dies ist die zweite Anhörung im Griechischen Staatsrat zu diesem Fall. Nach einer Anhörung am 29. November 2016 hatte die 4. Kammer des Staatsrates den Fall aufgrund seiner Wichtigkeit an das Plenum der des Staatsrates verwiesen. read more

Press release: European Civil Rescue Organisations stand up against smuggling allegations
NGOs which rescue people from drowning at sea are encouraging smugglers who profit from dangerous Mediterranean crossings, Frontex Director Fabrice Leggeri told the German newspaper "DIE WELT" on Feb 27, 2017.
We, the signatories of this statement, reject critiques that distort the facts. People do not migrate because they support smuggling networks. Smuggling networks exist because people have to flee. Only safe and legal routes to Europe can put an end to the traffickers' business. read more

Seenotrettungsorganisationen unterstützen durch ihre Missionen im Mittelmeer Schlepperbanden, die an den gefährlichen Überfahrten verdienen, erklärte Frontex-Chef Fabrice Leggeri im Interwiew mit der Zeitung "DIE WELT" am 27. Februar 2017.

PM: Sea-Watch wehrt sich gegen erneute Kriminalisierung ziviler Seenotrettung
Wie Sea-Watch schon Ende letzten Jahres befürchtet hat (Pressemitteilung 27.12.2016), setzt die EU im Wahljahr 2017 auf die Kriminalisierung derer, die an Europas Grenzen ehrenamtlich staatliche Aufgaben übernehmen. Frontex-Direktor Fabrice Leggeri ist nicht der Erste, der zivilen Rettungsorganisationen die Unterstützung krimineller Netzwerke und Schlepper in Libyen unterstellt. Die Wiederholung des Vorwurfs macht ihn allerdings nicht weniger absurd. read more

Hungary: Government’s New Asylum Bill on Collective Push-backs and Automatic Detention
On 14 February, the Hungarian government has submitted to Parliament a package of amendments to five acts: the Act on Asylum, the Act on the Admission and Right of Residence of Third-Country Nationals, the Act on State Border, the Act on Minor Offences and the Act on Child Protection and Guardianship Management. The Bill, titled “On the amendment of certain acts related to increasing the strictness of procedures carried out in the areas of border management” will be discussed during the spring session of Parliament and should take effect in late spring 2017. read more
