Migration is a hotly debated topic across Europe, often manipulated by far-right populist parties to push their own agendas. Myths like “more refugees lead to more crime” or “migration strains social welfare systems” fuel this discourse. Anna Alboth, co-founder of the human rights organization Border Group and media officer at Minority Rights Group International, discusses the alarming rise of right-wing parties in Europe and its potential impact on minority rights, including those of migrants and refugees. With the implementation of the Common European Asylum System, the EU–Lebanon migration deal, and increased funding for Frontex, the upcoming European elections are crucial for the future of human rights in the EU. In an interview with Sara Rastegar from the Rosa Luxemburg Foundation, Alboth shares her insights on the instrumentalization of migration and her hopes for the election. read more

BREAKING: front-LEX and Refugees in Libya file a legal notice pursuant to Art. 265 TFEU requesting Frontex’s director to partially terminate the Agency’s aerial surveillance activities in the ‘pre-frontier area’ in the Central Mediterranean. To prevent asylum seekers fleeing crimes against humanity in Libya from reaching the EU, Frontex systematically and unlawfully transmits the geolocalisation of refugee boats at high seas to the Libyan Coast Guard/Libyan Militia. Every day, Frontex allows for the systematic interception and pulling back of refugees to Libya, from where they have managed to escape by the skin of their teeth, and where they are subjected once more to crimes against humanity. Now, front-LEX brings an unprecedented legal challenge against Frontex’s airborne complicity. read more

27.05.2024, Amnesty International
In the context of the eighth EU Ministerial Brussels Conference on “Supporting the Future of Syria and the Region,” Amnesty International warns that donor governments, particularly EU member states, must ensure that funds pledged for Syrian refugees in Lebanon do not enable human rights abuses, including forced deportations. Amid heightened crackdowns on refugees by Lebanese authorities, robust monitoring is needed to ensure aid benefits those in need. Lebanon hosts the most refugees per capita but faces severe economic challenges. Human rights organizations emphasize that Syria remains unsafe for refugee returns, and EU countries must uphold their obligations to protect refugees. read more
