For almost three years, people seeking protection in the forest on the Polish-Belarusian border have found themselves in a limbo of pushbacks and violence. With the change of power in Poland, many had hoped that the new Prime Minister Donald Tusk would put an end to the inhumane treatment of asylum seekers in the border forest with Belarus. Instead, he is now calling for the border fence to be strengthened, which is to be partly financed with EU funds, and is fuelling fear of Belarus and the asylum seekers stuck between the two countries. Tusk now wants to invest over two billion euros in securing the eastern border and openly states that it is an ‘element of deterrence’. read more
