In recent years, several European countries have signed agreements with countries of origin, such as Libya and Tunisia, to block crossings. These agreements, aimed at reducing arrivals, have normalised the use of violence and support for authoritarian regimes. Migrants suffer violence, including systematic rape, in a context of massive human rights abuses by militias and traffickers. Despite criticism from international organisations, these policies have been praised by some political leaders for their 'effectiveness' in containing migration flows. read more

Some of the discriminatory measures imposed on women by the Taliban regime in Afghanistan constitute persecution, according to the European Union's top court. According to the European Court of Justice (ECJ), it is sufficient for EU member states to consider only the nationality and gender of Afghan women when assessing their individual asylum claims. The ECJ's rulings are binding on member states. read more

In view of the rampant human rights violations against migrants, asylum seekers, and refugees in Tunisia, especially those who are Black; Tunisia’s lack of an asylum system; the Tunisian government’s crackdown on civil society, judicial independence, and the media; and the impossibility of fairly and individually determining nationalities or assessing the protection needs of migrants and asylum seekers while at sea, it is clear that Tunisia is not a safe place for the disembarkation of people intercepted or rescued at sea. The ongoing cooperation between the European Union (EU), EU member states, and Tunisia on migration control which includes reliance on the possibility to disembark people rescued or intercepted at sea in Tunisia – similar to previous cooperation with Libya – is contributing to human rights violations. read more

The old boat stopped a few hundred metres from the port of Lampedusa on the night of 3 October 2013. We do not know if the engine was switched off or if it was a breakdown, but, certainly, among the 543 people on board - Eritreans and Ethiopians, many women and children, all returning from the Libyan prisons - fear began to spread, not least because of a leakage of water that had opened on board. While waiting, which lasted several hours, the migrants saw many boats pass by. read more

Sudanese refugees fleeing war and violence are among the many attempting dangerous crossings from France to the UK. Trapped in a cycle of displacement, they face harsh conditions in makeshift camps near Calais, where French authorities, funded by the UK, systematically block their attempts to cross the Channel. Many have no choice but to depend on smugglers or endure the violent pushbacks in Libya and Tunisia, as Europe continues to invest heavily in externalizing its borders rather than addressing the root causes of migration. read more
