Bulgarian police arrested more than 141 migrants near the Turkish border on Sunday. Among other places, the people were in a forest near Burgas, where they were apparently waiting for transport. Bulgarian authorities have announced in recent days that they want to strengthen "security" on the border with Turkey. In this region, Bulgaria had already erected a 259km-long barbed wire fence in 2017 and human rights organisations report regular, brutal pushbacks in the border region. read more

In recent months, protests by sub-Saharan migrants and refugees at the Tunisian-Libyan border have underscored the social role and sphere of action women occupy in resisting the border regime. Against the border violence that marks their bodies and stifles their voices, the struggle against rights violations is also expressed through the sewing and craft productions of the "Couture qui brise les frontières" project, which weaves collective practices of expressing migrant women's claims. read more

The United Kingdom now wants to work with Albanian authorities to advance the course to curb migration. Some migrants arriving in the country by boat are from Albania. The restrictive immigration system is already evident with plans to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda. However, because Albania, unlike Rwanda, is considered a "safe country of origin," the British government is trying to facilitate deportations to such countries through bilateral agreements. read more

Migrants in Libya accuse the EU of funding human rights abuses in Libya. The reports of torture, extortion, slavery and the inhumane conditions in the Libyan camps have been known for a long time. Nevertheless, the EU is funding the so-called Libyan Coast Guard to control migration to the EU in this way. In addition, there are increasing accusations that the EU member states are not sufficiently fulfilling their responsibility to save human lives in the Mediterranean. read more

The registration center for asylum seekers in Ter Apel, a village in the northeast of the Netherlands, right next to the German border, is overloaded. Due to a lack of dormitory space, hundreds of asylum seekers are sleeping in the open. The situation is tense because, among other things, it became known on Wednesday that a three-month-old baby died in a sports hall near the center. There is also a lack of showers and clean toilets, pregnant women and children, some with chronic illnesses, are sleeping outside and there is a lack of medical care. In the Netherlands, there is a lack of dormitory places, there is a significant backlog in the processing of applications by the Immigration Department IND and the housing market is extremely tight because recognized asylum seekers often gain no access to apartments and thus remain longer in the temporary shelters. read more

The refugee camp in the Eleona district of Athens is being evicted against the will of the residents. Since last Friday, hundreds of migrants have been protesting against the eviction and experience massive police violence. According to Migration Minister Notis Mitarakis, the eviction was necessary for the modernization of the district and because there was more space in other camps. The camp in Eleona was much better located to infrastructure and the city community compared to other camps in Greece. In the coming week, new transfers were announced. Refugees with rejected asylum procedures or without papers also live in Eleona and they are now threatened with deportation or homelessness. read more
