Lesvos, Greeces third-largest island, is bearing the brunt of the crisis. More than 25,000 people have arrived on the island of about 80,000 inhabitants since the start of the year — nearly half of the 55,000 who have reached Greece by sea from Turkey. The figure is a staggering 620 percent increase for Lesvos from the same period last year, said Lesvos Coast Guard Lt. Cmdr. The coast guard said it had rescued 1,161 people in 37 search-and-rescue operations off the islands of Samothraki, Lesbos, Chios, Samos, Agathonisi and Farmakonisi between Friday morning and Monday morning.. Greece is facing a massive migrant crisis, with more than 55,000 people, many from Syria, reaching Greek islands from the nearby Turkish coast since the beginning of the year. The vast majority don't want to stay in Greece but to head on to more prosperous European Union countries. read more

The head of the cantonal government of Ticino in Switzerland has threatened to close its border with Italy to migrants, accusing Italy of not honouring it EU obligations and describing Ticino as fast becoming "the southern border of Germany". According to Ticino government's president, Norman Gobbi, the number of asylum seekers and illegal immigrants crossing into Switzerland over the Italian border has doubled from last year. The huge increase is due in part to France's decision to enforce tighter controls on migrants on its border with Italy. read more

Britain is replacing the Royal Navy flagship that has saved the lives of more than 2,900 Mediterranean migrants with a survey vessel just half the size. The HMS Enterprise will take over from HMS Bulwark as part of what the government has called its “intelligence-led effort” in an attempt to tackle the migration crisis. Downing Street said HMS Enterprise would help by gathering intelligence “while continuing to rescue people as necessary” but it would appear to be a deliberate scaling down of capability. read more
