UNHCR denies role in identifying migrants in Albania

Italian Minister Luca Ciriani stated that UNHCR was involved in the identification of migrants at new Italian-run centres in Albania, but UNHCR later denied this and confirmed that its role was limited to independent monitoring. According to Ciriani, identification was carried out by Italian officials and IOM staff on board a naval vessel. UNHCR insisted that it was monitoring procedures under the Refugee Convention without being actively involved in the implementation of the Italy-Albania agreement. read more
