There have been numerous migrant rescues and arrivals in the central Mediterranean this week, with over 2,100 people reaching Italian shores, many of them on the island of Lampedusa. The NGO vessels Ocean Viking and Sea-Eye-5 together rescued 295 people from several small boats, some with injuries and burns. Italian authorities directed Ocean Viking to Genoa, a three-day journey that SOS Mediterranee criticised as a "cruel measure" for those on board. read more
