Until recently, the bodies of missing refugees and migrants were found scattered all over the Aegean Sea, two months after the tragic shipwrecks in Paros, Folegandros and Antikythera. The survivors – relatives and companions of these people who are anxiously searching for clues about their fate, instead of receiving the necessary psychosocial care under dignified reception conditions, were taken to the Pre-removal Detention Centre (PROKEKA) in Amygdaleza where they remained in administrative detention for more than a month. The recent shipwrecks have once again highlighted the huge shortcomings in the information, support and care of survivors, in the coordination of the management of shipwreck victims such as the protocol for the search and identification of the missing and dead respectively and the referral to an appropriate reception facility. read more
Spaking at a news briefing in Cairo on Wednesday (February 23), the Hungarian foreign minister Peter Szijjarto urged the EU to step up efforts and funding to assist the Egyptian government in its attempt to deal with migration. He also said that such EU support should be intended to further help Egypt in boosting its border security with some neighboring counties which have been plagued with conflict for years. The comment was regarded as an apparent reference to Libya and Sudan. read more

On the night of Friday 18 to Saturday 19 February, the so-called "Libyan coastguard" fired live ammunition at a boat containing around 80 migrants, including women and children. The exiles were trying to avoid being intercepted at sea and sent back to Libya. According to the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), one person was killed and three injured. The IOM "condemns in the strongest terms the excessive use of force by the Libyan stabilisation support apparatus", namely the coast guard. The UN agency is calling for an investigation to be launched to shed light on this "incident" and to punish those responsible. read more
