Mindestens drei Menschen, die aus Libyen evakuiert worden waren, sind heute morgen vor Kreta ertrunken, nachdem sie vom Schiff ins Meer gesprungen waren. 1200 Flüchtlinge, die meisten aus Bangledesh, waren an Bord. Ca. 50 von ihnen sprangen vor der Hafeneinfahrt ins Meer, wohl um nicht identifiziert und rückgeführt zu werden. Neben den 3 Toten sind 17 Vermisste zu verzeichnen. (Artikel in ital. Der Umbruch in Nordafrika ist eine grosse Bewährungsprobe für die europäische Grenzschutzagentur Frontex. In Süditalien sind erstmals Schweizer Grenzwächter im Einsatz. Im Zentrum von Bari arbeitet auch B.*, einer der beiden Schweizer Grenzwächter, die derzeit in Süditalien für Frontex arbeiten. Diese EU-Agentur kontrolliert die gemeinsame Aussengrenze der europäischen Staaten, die sich dem Abkommen von Schengen angeschlossen haben. Aufgrund der Krise in Nordafrika hat Frontex 30 zusätzliche Grenzwächter nach Süditalien geschickt, um die dortigen Behörden zu unterstützen. read more

Italien soll die Tunesier aufhalten und zurücknehmen, hat der neue französische Innenminister, Claude Guéant, verlangt. Die Bekämpfung der illegalen Migration sei einer seiner vorrangigen Ziele. Im Kanal von Sizilien gab es einen erneutes Unglück. Bei schwerer See geriet ein Boot mit 22 Tunesiern an Bord in Seenot. Ein Fischer aus Mazara del Vallo hat die Schiffbrüchigen übernommen, aufgrund der hohen Wellen wurden jedoch 4 Tunesier über Bord gespült. 2 konnten gerettet werden, die anderen beiden waren nicht mehr aufzufinden. Nach einer längeren Pause sind auf der Mittelmeerinsel Lampedusa in den vergangenen beiden Tagen wieder mindestens 700 Flüchtlinge aus Tunesien gelandet. Alle paar Stunden schleppen die italienische Küstenwacht und die Finanzpolizei die armseligen Boote in den Hafen des kleinen gleichnamigen Hauptortes der Insel. Die kleinsten der Boote sind kaum vier Meter lang. Die ersten 350 Flüchtlinge kamen noch bei stürmischer See und widrigen Wetterbedingungen in der Nacht auf Mittwoch auf einem größeren Holzkahn, seither aber hat sich das Wetter beruhigt. read more

Vor den Unruhen in arabischen Ländern sind nach EU-Angaben bislang bis zu 7000 Menschen nach Europa geflohen. Die EU-Kommissarin für humanitäre Hilfe, Kristalina Georgieva, verschafft sich heute an der tunesisch-libyschen Grenzen einen Überblick über die wachsenden Flüchtlingsströme aus Libyen. Die Zahl der Flüchtlinge hat sich zuletzt drastisch erhöht. Bisher haben rund 165.000 Menschen Libyen verlassen. Rund die Hälfte davon sind Ägypter, aber wir registrieren auch immer mehr Libyer und Schwarzafrikaner. read more

Nach Informationen von ZEIT ONLINE hat ein Fernsehteam im Auftrag des TV-Senders RTL Flüchtlinge aus Tunesien auf der Überfahrt mit einem Boot nach Italien begleitet. Der Reporter und sein Kameramann erreichten die Insel Lampedusa auf einem vollkommen überfüllten Fischkutter mit etwa 350 weiteren Flüchtlingen. read more

Nach Angaben des Uno-Hochkommissariats für Flüchtlinge (UNHCR) schafften es am Donnerstag nur noch rund 2000 Menschen über die Grenze nach Tunesien. Noch bis Dienstag hatten täglich bis zu 15'000 Menschen die Grenze überschritten. Truppen schikanieren Flüchtlinge. «An der Grenze sind auf der libyschen Seite jetzt schwer bewaffnete Regierungstruppen stationiert. Von denjenigen, denen es gelungen ist, die Grenze zu überqueren, haben wir gehört, dass auf dem Weg Mobiltelefone und Kameras konfisziert werden», sagte eine UNHCR-Sprecherin. An der italienischen Mittelmeerinsel Lampedusa sind erstmals seit einer Woche wieder mehrere Schiffe mit Flüchtlingen aus Tunesien eingetroffen. Wie die Küstenwache mitteilte, erreichten rund 500 Menschen aus dem nordafrikanischen Land die kleine Insel. In der vergangenen Woche hatte schlechtes Wetter Überfahrten von Tunesien nach Lampedusa unmöglich gemacht. Mitte Februar hatten innerhalb weniger Tage mehr als 5000 Tunesier Lampedusa erreicht. read more

Nach einigen Tagen Pause sind wieder zahlreiche Flüchtlinge aus Nordafrika auf der italienischen Insel Lampedusa angekommen. Die italienische Küstenwache sichtete am Mittwochabend ein Boot mit rund 100 Flüchtlingen an Bord, berichteten italienische Medien. Italien will in Kürze ein Lager zur Unterstützung der Flüchtlinge in Tunesien unweit der libyschen Grenze errichten. read more
