The Italian Council of Ministers has adopted a legislative decree containing a list of so-called 'safe' countries of origin for migrants, i.e. countries considered by the government to be so safe that asylum applications from their citizens will be processed in an accelerated procedure while the asylum seeker is in detention. The text of the decree is not yet available and was not distributed to the journalists present. The aim is to give the impression that the centres in Albania make sense. read more

Clashes between Ethiopian government forces and militias have exacerbated the crisis for Sudanese refugees in the Amhara region, who face attacks, forced labour and displacement. After protesting against abuses in May 2024, many were forced into a forest where they endured 100 days of violence and deprivation. In August, security forces forcibly relocated some refugees, separating families and forcing others back into Sudan. Human Rights Watch called for urgent action to protect these vulnerable people and to stop the forced returns. read more

The European Union's stance on migration is more in line with Donald Trump's hardline policies than its rhetoric would suggest. While EU leaders avoid Trump's xenophobic language, their policies increasingly reflect his approach, with discussions focusing on migrant processing centres, faster deportations and border security. Countries like Italy and France are pushing to limit migration and increase returns, while Hungary's Viktor Orbán has fully embraced Trump-style rhetoric. read more

The new refugee camps on the Greek islands are already reaching their limits. NGOs have criticised the isolation of the people and the difficulty of access. Indeed, the refugees' freedom of movement is severely restricted, as they can only enter the camps with a chip card and a fingerprint scan, and cannot leave without permission. In addition to the logistical and humanitarian challenges, there are also financial difficulties. The Greek government has announced that EU funding is insufficient to ensure the operation and expansion of the camps. read more

Viktor Orbán's hardline stance on migration, once considered extreme, is increasingly shaping EU policy. At an upcoming EU Council meeting, member states are likely to endorse tougher measures, including 'return centres' outside the EU to contain migrants, in line with Orbán's vision. This shift reflects growing pressure from far-right anti-immigration parties across Europe, pushing mainstream politics towards a more exclusionary approach, as the EU moves towards a 'Fortress Europe' model. read more
