In view of the rampant human rights violations against migrants, asylum seekers, and refugees in Tunisia, especially those who are Black; Tunisia’s lack of an asylum system; the Tunisian government’s crackdown on civil society, judicial independence, and the media; and the impossibility of fairly and individually determining nationalities or assessing the protection needs of migrants and asylum seekers while at sea, it is clear that Tunisia is not a safe place for the disembarkation of people intercepted or rescued at sea. The ongoing cooperation between the European Union (EU), EU member states, and Tunisia on migration control which includes reliance on the possibility to disembark people rescued or intercepted at sea in Tunisia – similar to previous cooperation with Libya – is contributing to human rights violations. read more

The old boat stopped a few hundred metres from the port of Lampedusa on the night of 3 October 2013. We do not know if the engine was switched off or if it was a breakdown, but, certainly, among the 543 people on board - Eritreans and Ethiopians, many women and children, all returning from the Libyan prisons - fear began to spread, not least because of a leakage of water that had opened on board. While waiting, which lasted several hours, the migrants saw many boats pass by. read more

Sudanese refugees fleeing war and violence are among the many attempting dangerous crossings from France to the UK. Trapped in a cycle of displacement, they face harsh conditions in makeshift camps near Calais, where French authorities, funded by the UK, systematically block their attempts to cross the Channel. Many have no choice but to depend on smugglers or endure the violent pushbacks in Libya and Tunisia, as Europe continues to invest heavily in externalizing its borders rather than addressing the root causes of migration. read more

The EU's migration deal with Tunisia has led to widespread abuse of migrants by Tunisian security forces, including sexual violence and abandonment in the desert, while Europe continues to fund these operations. By externalising its borders and paying Tunisia to block migration, the EU avoids direct responsibility for human rights abuses, despite mounting evidence of collusion between Tunisian authorities and smugglers. Despite these events, the EU plans to renew funding. read more

Giorgia Meloni's government is increasing the criminalisation of immigration, imposing harsh penalties on those who assist migrants, while expanding the detention of irregular entrants. Despite her claims of compassion, Meloni's policies create a legal environment that leaves many migrants in precarious situations, effectively treating them as criminals rather than seeking humane solutions to their plight. This hardline approach reflects a wider trend of punishing those fleeing desperation while failing to address the underlying problems of migration. read more

Croatia has stepped up its efforts to combat smuggling, with a significant increase in the number of arrests of people involved in facilitating irregular migration. Smugglers, many of whom are foreign nationals, are heavily targeted as part of the country's crackdown on migration along the Balkan route. Despite the focus on criminalising these networks, smuggling rings continue to operate, particularly near the Bosnia-Croatia border. This approach reflects Croatia's broader strategy of externalising migration control and reinforcing its role as a gatekeeper to the European Union. read more

The core anti-immigration ideology of the modern far right is driven by the 'Great Replacement' theory. This idea fuels violent fantasies targeting immigrant communities, with far-right influencers playing a crucial role in spreading these views online. The movement's anti-immigrant stance is not just local but transnational, linking grievances about immigration across countries. Far-right influencers capitalise on this shared anger, amplifying narratives of 'invasion' and 'occupation' to incite their followers. Their rhetoric often portrays migrants as a threat to national identity and culture, and legitimises fantasies of extreme violence as a response to the perceived crisis. read more
