Afghans account for the largest group of asylum applicants in Greece by far. A recent report from the International Rescue Committee (ICR) sheds light on the difficulties Afghans are going through in Greece and the serious impact on their physical and mental health. About 97% of the people monitored by the organization has reported symptoms of depression, whilst 50% had considered suicide. After fleeing violence and persecution, people are pushed back from Greek borders to Turkey or Afghanistan. Greece continues to label Turkey as “safe third country”, wherefore many asylum seekers are unable to explain why they need international protection, and find their applications continuously refused. The story is different for the 70,000 Ukrainians who sought asylum in Greece. This article reveals the double standards towards people on the move in Greece. read more

In the beginning of September, asylum seekers in the EU-funded Closed Control Access Centre (CCAC) on Samos protested against their treatment by the Greek authorities. They were demanding respect for their human rights, such access to fair asylum procedures. The protest was sparked by the Greek authorities issuing, in one day, 40 rejections of the asylum claims of 40 people held in the CCAC, most of whom are from Sierra Leone. This article gives an overview of the situation in Greek “hotspots islands” where increasing violations of applicants' procedural rights are reported, such as people being detained upon arrival and denied access to information and counseling before their asylum interviews. read more

The camp was evacuated by the French police on Wednesday, for the 15th time since the beginning of 2022. It is located along the banks of the Ourcq Canal on the outskirts of the French capital. According to the authorities, it was evacuated because it posed a danger to those camping there, being so near to the water, as well as because of the poor sanitary conditions. The people were taken to centers in the Ile-de-France area and in the wider region around Paris. According to the German news agency dpa, the men had been staying at the camp for several months. The NGO Utopia 56 informs about another settlement under the bridges between Pantin and Paris, criticizing the government’s strategy of dealing with migrants as “unacceptable” and calling on the authorities not to abandon the people to the street. read more

The Maltese government is concerned with a stark increase in the arrivals of people on the move, because of the harsh anti-migration policy the new Italian government is expected to pursue. “Malta and Italy share the same challenges in the central Mediterranean” and “it isn’t possible to deal with these challenges if we don’t work together” stressed the Maltese Interior Minister, Byron Camilleri, to the Times of Malta on Monday (September 26). Simultaneously, NGOs have repeatedly criticized Maltese authorities for conducting pushbacks, as well as ignoring requests from rescues ships for a safe port of disembarkation. read more

Migrant rights advocates have expressed concern over the victory of Giorgia Meloni’s right-wing party in the Italian national elections. They worry about the situation for people on the move at the French border and in the Central Mediterranean becoming even more dramatic. Violations of human rights are already systematic, but expected to increase. Amnesty International France expects more migrants leaving Italy for France, and has therefore started “surveilling police practices” at the border. Whilst solidarity amongst EU member states seems to be a mere mirage, it has never been so fundamental, especially concerning the situation in the Central Mediterranean. read more
