New decree obstructs lifesaving rescue efforts at sea and will cause more deaths
On January 2nd, the new law decree on the code of conduct for civil sea rescue was published in the official gazette. With a few changes to the draft, it was approved and went into effect on January 3, 2023. In the following joint statement, civil sea rescue organizations and supporting organizations call on the Italian government to revoke this legislative decree and under no circumstances to let it become law. "What we need is not another politically motivated framework obstructing lifesaving SAR
activities, but for EU Member States to finally comply with existing international and maritime laws as well as guarantee the operational space for civil SAR actors."
