Protests and petitions are important tools to put pressure on governments. Visa liberalisation and safe escape routes can save lives. What can international law do?
Thousands of people are disappearing along the migration routes: over 40,000 are missing in the Mediterranean alone. The reluctance of Frontex and national coastguards to intervene is a major factor. People are being sent back to crisis zones or abandoned in the desert. This has been condemned by the UN Committee against Enforced Disappearances.
