Italy: Memorandum of Understanding with Albania (German)

The Italian government signs a memorandum of understanding with Albania that provides for the establishment of two (repatriation) centres in Albania. These centres are to accommodate up to 3,000 refugees rescued by Italian military ships in the Mediterranean. The agreement is opaque and inhumane and has no clear legal basis. It also divides those seeking protection into two classes, depending on whether they arrive from civilian ships or from a ship belonging to the Italian authorities. A statement (german only).
