In mehreren maritimen Missionen will die Europäische Union derzeit Geflüchtete und ihre Helfer aufspüren. Militärs arbeiten dabei eng mit Grenz- und Kriminalpolizeidiensten zusammen. Am 22. Juni haben die 28 Regierungen der EU-Mitgliedstaaten den Beginn von "Phase 1" der militärischen Mission EUNAVFOR MED beschlossen. Ziel ist zunächst das Aufspüren der Netzwerke von kommerziellen Fluchthelfern, die in entsprechenden Dokumenten gewöhnlich als "Schlepper" und "Schleuser" bezeichnet werden. Später sollen deren Infrastrukturen und vor allem Schiffe und Boote, die von Flüchtlingen genutzt werden könnten, zerstört werden. Nach einer zweimonatigen Startphase wird die Mission zunächst für ein Jahr betrieben, über eine Verlängerung wird dann entschieden. Die vorläufigen Kosten werden auf 11,82 Millionen Euro geschätzt. read more

An elf Rettungseinsätzen haben sich vier Schiffe der Bundeswehr im Mittelmeer bis Ende Juni beteiligt. Seit ca. drei Wochen haben sie keine Rettungseinsätze mehr durchgeführt, vermutlich weil sie sich an der Antischleuser-Misson der Europäischen Union, der Operation Eunavfor Med, beteiligen sollen. Erst in der Nacht zum Donnerstag nahm die „Werra“ auf Bitten der italienischen Behörden wieder 211 Insassen von zwei Schlauchbooten auf. read more

Protests against the EU refugee distribution plan, according to which Estonia must receive migrants from African countries erupted at Freedom Square in Estonia's capital of Tallinn. His remarks came as suspected arsonists set fire to a future home for asylum seekers near Karlsruhe. Despite lengthy discussions with Italian authorities and efforts by the Italian Coastguards, the Bourbon Argos was not authorised to disembark the 700 migrants in Sicily due to lack of capacity of the reception system. read more

Cairo deported 36 Sudanese migrants back to Khartoum, Sudan, after they attempted to emigrate illegally to Italy last week, a government agency reported Thursday. The migrants were found on a fishing boat off the northern coast of Egypt.
