The U.N. refugee agency urged the European Union on Thursday to take in far greater numbers of refugees than planned as the number of desperate Syrians fleeing conflict continues to grow. The EU's 28 nations resettled around 8,500 people in need of protection last year, according to UNHCR figures, and plans to resettle 20,000 refugees from outside Europe over the next two years. UNHCR Assistant High Commissioner for Protection Volker Turk says that "there will be a much greater and more urgent need to increase these numbers." read more

In the absence of sufficient funding from aid organizations, Syrian refugees in Lebanon have looked for alternative methods of raising money. The methods they have created to help each other range from fundraising through social media to opening privately-owned refugee camps, many of which have ties to governments in the Gulf region. The government is overwhelmed by an influx equal to almost 50 percent of the Lebanese population. Many of Lebanon’s estimated 2 million Syrian refugees receive no aid at all. Meanwhile, the United Nations refugee organization is at the end of its rope, without enough money to cover its budget for refugees in Lebanon. read more

Austria is, compared to other EU-states, at the top in the intake of refugees. Apparently, this pushes the municipalities to their borders. Director of Diakonie Michael Chalupka said in an interview with Radio Vatikan that currently there is a typical Austrian crisis. That is that the federal government, federal states and municipalities don't cooperate to create accommodation in Austria. It simply is not comprehesible and explainable that there are too little places for refugees in one of the richest countries on earth. Whole tent camps are deployed instead of using the existing accommodation. read more

Jordanian border restrictions have left hundreds of Syrians refugees stranded in a remote desert area, a leading international rights group said Wednesday, urging Jordan to let them enter the country. The group's regional director, Nadim Houry, said that Jordan has gone to great lengths to help refugees, but that this is "no excuse to abandon newer arrivals in remote areas for weeks without effective protection and regular aid access." read more

Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has urged the UK Government to recognise its international obligation to refugees and participate in the EU Commission's call for further resettlement of people fleeing Syria and Eritrea. Sturgeon said that "Scotland is willing to take our fair share of refugees". The UK needs to resettle significantly more refugees as outlined by the EU Commission and create other safe and legal routes for refugees to access protection, including making it much easier for people to be reunited with family members already in the UK." The UK has resettled less than 200 Syrian refugees since 2011. read more

Every year hundreds of thousands of people are trafficked across borders. Whether they are lured with the promise of a better life, attempting to escape poverty and violence, fleeing persecution in their home-state, or taken against their will, they are put in an incredibly vulnerable situation- completely dependent on their traffickers, with no say in their future. Malaysian media has just reported that Rohingya women who were being held captive at human trafficking camps in Thailand and Malaysia were being sexually assaulted by their captors. read more

A small boat crammed with two dozen migrants sputtered in the Mediterranean Sea as the motor cut out. It sat helplessly for an hour-and-a-half until, amid nightfall, a voice called out for help when another ship came close. That voice belonged to Syrian journalist Aliaa Hwijah was voyaging on the boat from Turkey in hopes of seeking asylum in Europe. Greek sailors found the idled vessel. "Hello! We need some help here!" Hwijah said in English in a video of the rescue obtained by NBC News' British partner, ITV News. The Greek coast guard told the stranded migrants to stay on board. Help was on its way. read more

Greece and Norway have agreed to use funding from the European Economic Area and Norway Grants to establish a new reception center on the island of Lesvos. Through the EEA and Norway Grants, Norway will use 1.6 million euros to fund the day-to-day operation of the reception center on the island of Lesvos for a one-year period. This will enhance Greece’s capacity to receive migrants. The center is due to open later this year. At the same time, Norway is extending its support for a similar reception center in north-eastern Greece (Fylakio, near the Turkish border) for a further year, until 2017. read more
