Italy's new head of government and first female prime minister Giorgia Meloni, has taken office in a very short time together with her 24-member cabinet. After renaming the ministries, Meloni also made a personnel change, which you can see in more detail here. The rescue ship Geo Barant rescued 297 refugees from the Mediterranean, half of whom are unaccompanied minors. After nine long days, Italian authorities now authorized the ship's entry into the southern Italian port of Taranto. The Mallorca-based carrier 'Privilege Style' was willing to partner with the UK government and conduct the deportation flights that other airlines had refused. This is not the case anymore, as the airline decided to withdraw from the scheme after an email campaign by torture survivors and refugee organisations, led by the charity Freedom from Torture. The European Parliament has refused to endorse the 2020 budget for Frontex due to the agency’s failure to protect the fundamental rights of migrants, and their involvement in hundreds of illegal pushbacks. The resolution was approved on Tuesday (October 18) with 345 votes in favor, 284 against and eight abstentions. Cases of sexual harassment involving staff members were also mentioned (17 cases were reported in 2020, of which 15 were closed without follow-up). read more

Turkish officials claim to have rescued another 67 people in Aegean waters, after they were pushed back by Greek authorities. A report published by Turkey’s Ombudsman Institution states that Greece is responsible for pushing back about 42,000 asylum seekers since 2020. Meanwhile, Greece continues to deny involvement in these practices, while pressing Turkey to stop migrant departures. read more

The arbitrary burial of four unidentified bodies by Tunisian authorities sparked nationwide demonstrations. Last Thursday (10/13/2022), nearly 4,000 protesters gathered in Zarsis, chanting anti-authority slogans and calling for more intensive searches for missing migrants. In a new report, Doctors Without Borders (MSF) claims that 23 migrants rescued in Maltese waters were sent back to Egypt, allegedly on the order of Malta’s Rescue Coordinator Center (RCC). This violation of the principle of non-refoulment took place on September 26, but it wasn’t the first time this has happened, as exposed by MSF. read more

The Finnish Prime Minister confirmed the majority approval of the fence construction on the Finnish-Russian border by the Parliament. The fence construction is to cover mainly southeastern areas of Finland, as the migration movement is strongest there. The European Parliament yesterday (Oct. 18, 2022) voted by a majority against budgetary discharge for Frontex. It emerged earlier in the Olaf report that the border agency has made illegal pushbacks, covered them up, as well as not investigated. Some German politicians still argue in favor of the agency and emphasize the change of personnel. According to the aid organization Doctors Without Borders, 76 people with 17 minors were rescued on a wooden boat in the Mediterranean Sea on Monday evening (17/10/2022). In the course of several rescue operations on Monday, the crew of the rescue ship Geo Barants helped the survival of nearly 300 people. The Italian coast guard has taken 65 refugees. 18 migrants were found last Friday (14.10.2022) during a routine check at the German-Polish border by customs and federal police officers. The refugees, including children and two unaccompanied minors, were in an air- and light-tight refrigerated truck, where none of their basic human needs could be satisfied. Since then, the unaccompanied minors have remained with the German youth authorities, while the remaining migrants have been placed in the reception center in Eisenhüttenstadt. read more
