Hunderte Demonstranten haben am Mittwoch in Berlin gegen einen Auftritt des Operatividrektors der europäischen Grenzschutzagentur Frontex, Klaus Rösler, protestiert. Auf Einladung der Schwarzkopf-Stiftung sollte Rösler einen Vortrag zum Thema „Wie funktioniert die europäische Grenzsicherung?“ halten. Polizisten mussten ihn mit Gewalt den Weg durch eine aufgebrachte Menge bahnen, Demonstranten bewarfen Rösler und das Stiftungsgebäude mit Farbbeuteln und Marmelade. read more

Am 2. Mai 2015 startet auf Malta eine Rettungsaktion für Flüchtlinge auf dem Mittelmeer. Die privat finanzierte maltesische Nichtregierungsorganisation „Moas“ (the Migrant Offshore Aid Station) wird mit einer Crew von 20 Personen vor der libyschen Küste mit dem 40-Meter-Schiff „Phoenix“ Flüchtlinge retten. Direktor von „Moas“ ist der frühere maltesische Verteidigungsminister und die Organisation wurde durch Spenden des italienischen Unternehmerehepaars Christopher und Regina Catrambone begründet. read more

On April 20, the Joint Foreign and Home Affairs Council of the EU released a ten-point action plan outlining their response to the recent deaths of migrants in the Mediterranean Sea. Many other proposals have also been made over the last few days. We are activists who have been involved in the struggles against the European border regime for several years and who have been in touch on a daily basis with hundreds of people who have crossed the Mediterranean through Watch The Med and the Alarm Phone project. Faced with the hypocrisy of the “solutions” that have been proposed so far, we feel compelled to undermine their falsity and attempt to open up an alternative space for reflection and action. read more

For this, the Libyan state should be strengthened and instability in Syria diminished. A commitment is also made to strengthening presence at sea, fighting traffickers, destroying vessels before they are used by traffickers and monitoring and control mechanisms to prevent illegal migration flows. read more

Wealthy countries should agree on a comprehensive plan to take 1 million refugees from Syria over the next five years to end the unfolding series of boat disasters in the Mediterranean, the UN’s special rapporteur on the human rights of migrants has urged. He argues it would be manageable for countries like the UK, Canada and Australia to take in between 5,000 and 15,000 refugees per year for the next five years. read more

Other than restating a commitment to facilitate the resettlement of refugees and develop relocation initiatives, the Council confines itself to a rhetoric that has not only demonstrated its ineffectiveness, but has led to growing human tragedies at Europe’s maritime borders. read more
The head of the EU border agency Frontex has said that saving migrants’ lives in the Mediterranean should not be the priority for the maritime patrols he is in charge of. He claims that this is not in Frontex’s mandate and not in the mandate of the European Union. read more

The EU and its Member States are asked to take urgent measures to prevent further loss of life. These deaths are not inevitable, nor can responsibility be placed at the door of unscrupulous smugglers. It is time for the EU to recognise that they are the result of clear political choices. The ten point-action plan presented at the emergency meeting on 20 April 2015, failed to address the human tragedies. Instead, it revealed a further set of measures focusing on securing EU borders. read more

Europe will continue to see unauthorized immigrants crossing the Mediterranean as long as poverty and conflict persist.
